What is the reasoning behind the 4 month infant restriction on the Ergo? DS is only eight weeks, but he's 14lbs and holds his head up well. His head comes up above the carrier so he can breathe and he seems totally stable. I know there is an insert, but I really don't need to be spending money on it.

I think more than the things you named having them spread their legs the width of your body is a concern, but I'm not 100% sure that's it. I couldn't use the infant insert, but when DS was 12 weeks I rolled up a med size blanket and " frogged" his legs and all was fine.
Yeah, C outgrew the infant insert at about 7 weeks. Don't waste money on it.
I boost his butt up a little with a rolled-up hand towel and froggy one leg and leave the other sticking out. (If I froggy both legs at this point, he will stick them straight down through the waist belt, which is uncomfortable and dangerous and is why I stopped using the infant insert.) He can't quite comfortably spread his legs enough to have both out yet. He practically lives in the thing.
FWIW, I think the restriction is 12 pounds OR 4 months. Once we crossed 12 pounds, we ditched the infant insert.
I just bought an Ergo on baby steals last week. Am I going to want an infant insert for it? I have a Moby and a ring sling and liked both when my other kids were newborns. Do you think I will be happy just using those until DS3 is old enough for the Ergo sans insert?
Hens, I didn't have a ring sling but I had a Moby and I hated it. I could never get C wrapped where he felt secure. He was a big baby so I'm sure that's a part of it. Also, he does not like to be reclining--he prefers being upright, which is why the Ergo is so great for us. The infant insert was totally worth it--it kept him all snuggled up and secure.
BUT, I'd probably wait until your baby is here to spend the money for it. The Moby and ring sling may be just fine.

Hens, I would just use the moby until the baby is big enough for the ergo alone.
I never like the ergo or beco for littler babies- not really until they were big enough for their legs to come all the way out. That said, when i did use them, i didn't use the infant insert, I just used a receiving blanket or nothing under the bum.
I used the infant insert all of twice, DS was so ridiculously hot in it. Sweating like crazy, sticky face in between my boobs. He has a huge head, so it was awhile before he could hold it up for long periods, like 4.5 months I think? I just shelved the Ergo until then.
We use the Moby too and love it. It's just easier to have Moby in the car and ergo in the house. Also, dh didn't use the Moby, but he's open to the ergo.
I was just thinkimg about the infant insert today. DD's very happy in the ring sling, but I really loved using the ergo with my last kid... but I didn't have it when he was tiny, so I know nothing about using it with newborns.
So the site says, "The Ergobaby Infant Insert is required for babies ranging from 7 to 12 lbs or newborns to 4-5 months." Does that mean that you can't use if for a baby over 12lb? Because DD was 12lb at her 1mo appt.
I tried using it with her legs froggied today and she wasn't a big fan. Maybe a towel under her butt would help. Or maybe I'll just wait until her legs can spread.
I really hated my Moby, so I got the Ergo infant insert. It's being loaned around and I'll get it back for my next baby, so we will definitely get a lot of use out of it. It does get very hot, so it is not good for summer babies. My baby loved it and would fall asleep in it often. I've heard of people using blankets instead.
