Hondurican is on a three day vacation has his "Christmas." (Remember my post where he whined for a whole week?)
He told us all he was going to a nearby metro area to find an apt. figure out the college campus for the next semester and visit some friends.
He asked to take my car and I said No. I just have too much to do before Christmas I can't do with Hs truck. It's also snowy/icy and I don't trust his driving enough in that regard. Also, TBH his friends live in a complete ghetto. Plain. Simple. Honest Truth. I know that sounds horrible, but I'm literally not saying that to be mean/deragatory/whatever. He's also had my car like 8 of the 10 days off, so I'm not feeling bad in wanting it. I did offer to drive to the very handy bus station.
He refused and asked BIL for one of his spare cars (he buys random junk to fix up as a hobby). BIL being the nice guy he is says sure. Whatever. That was nice.
On Hondurican's way out this morning, MIL asks if he'd drop off a present for a former exchange student who's in the same metro area and they visit each other often.
He told her No as he was going to Missouri instead to visit another friend.
WTF BUTTERCUP!?!?!!?
A) He told us all he was going to the metro area. That's why BIL let him take his car..no big deal.
B) The difference between said Metro area and Missouri is oh...say...850 miles! It wasn't like he just changed towns within the state or something.
I know Hondurican is a grown adult and can make his own decisions but when you're borrowing someone else's vehicle I feel like they have a right to know at least the general vicinity of where you're headed..lol. It wasn't like the travel itenerary said Starbucks at 8:30am and he swung through a Caribou instead.
We've never had this happen before. All of are other E. students were so good about being honest with we're they're headed/letting us know/being grateful etc. Now I'm mad..I feel like all of our trust was betrayed a bit.
We had a small family "meeting" over this tonight with SIL/BIL and we're all like WTF still. SIL just said if it's any consolation, she didn't take the extra carseats out, the heat only works on high and it's farm car lately so once it's warm it reeks like cow and the CD player is stuck on a kiddie Christmas CD. So it's going to be a long ride to MO.
Anyways, if you were us, what would you do? He's just going to come back and blame it on "bad English" which I know isn't true, but is his excuse everytime he gets in trouble.
I think I'm just annoyed, because he's been a good guy and a decent worker up until this point...but these last 3 weeks or so have just been weird. We've talked about it and he swears he has no issues, loves it here etc.
You think he's going to be back on time? That's a long way to go for a three day trip. Hmmmm.....
We thought that too. However, his friend from MO has visited numerous times in like a quick 2 day thing...so it's just their thing. That and I have the program office on my side. It explicity says if you're not back to said farm when your vacation is up (weather, late flights, out of anyone's control sort of stuff exempted) you forfeit your right to be in the program. A) He needs his money B) He's dying to go to school here..so I doubt he'd do that. Not to mention when you're on a work VISA in a foreign country the rules about such things are stricter than you'd think.
Where is MO is here going?? I'm curious do I need to check on him? Yes I'd be annoyed to since he's borrow a vehicle
Ha! I don't rightly know. I've met his friend twice. She was a nice girl but I don't remember where she lives in MO exactly.
No need to check on him. I really don't care what he does at this point, or the fact he's there as he is a grown up. I'm just p*ssed he lied to us all.
H just said he's going to play dumb when gets back. Ask lots of questions about what he did in metro area, how our former student is, etc. Just to catch him in a lie...and a lot of physical labor, icky farm jobs nobody else wants to do in his future as well.

Hahahahaha. Good plan. I love you H more and more.
Personally, I would have just taken the keys as he was heading out the door and told him the deal is off since he lied. I would not be surprised if the car is returned sans the car seats - he will need to toss them out to make room for his friends.
Definitely give him the nastiest most laborious jobs on the farm when he returns!! And when he gripes, just shrug and walk away.
Sorry to be so harsh - I just have very little patience for people like that. I'm sure he's a good kid deep down, he just needs a major dose of the real world.

Yeah, too bad it wasn't resolved before he left. Especially if he feels like he has tacit approval since he told your MIL.
I think BIL should calculate how many miles he expected to have run up on his car for the short trip, then make him pay for (or work off) all those extra miles, like he'd (hypothetically) have to if it were a regular rental.

He totally does! He's very used to getting what he wants honestly and that's hard for all of us. THere's no concept with him that we have things because we work hard and sometimes it's okay not share our things just because YOU want them.
H and I would've stopped him at the door, but we were on errands when he left and my MIL just happened to walk over as he was leaving. She just thought at first there was a plan change, NBD nobody filled her in. She wasn't going to stop him when she didn't know for sure..otherwise she'd have beat him down Karate Kid style most definitely.
I love the condition of the car, that will be some good punishment right there. I also really like your H's plan for when he returns because it doesn't seem like talking to him is productive. Nasty physical labor and uncomfortable questioning seems like better consequences.

I was kind of thinking this. I mean, BIL can ask why or how he put so many miles on just in the metro area and get hondurican to fess up. After that he should tell him that the terms of the loan were broken and he has to pay up. I can't believe someone would borrow a car to go OUT OF STATE when they said it was going to be a short distance. Also point out how easily he could have gotten pulled over with out of state plates... And heavily questioned based on his car not being in his name (I mean, people still racially profile even though its not allowed or legit). Also you could have reported the car as stolen and got his ass slapped in the slammer since he took it out of the agreed upon areas. He needs to think about the outside consequences beyond those with you!
Seriously, Ohio cops are crazy about pulling out of staters over. I can fly by on the turnpike as long as I'm going with PA plates. If he gets pulled over and the license doesn't match the registration, and I'm guessing he may have a name that could be wayyyy different from yours.... And there are cars seats in the back.... I think a cop might wonder!
I didn't even think about the fact he could get pulled over and questioned. Cops are on high alert this time of year. Dang Dairy, I hope you and Mr. Dairy don't get a phone call from Missouri state police asking you to come bail the kid out of jail!
LOL girls! That's what H and I worried about. This from Hondurican himself who is always on a rant about racial profiling (our town cop pulled him over because my headlight just happened to go out on his way home. Nothing happened obviously, NBD but he was mad for weeks..I was like umm...the cop is bored. I'd have been pulled over too!).
He goes to jail..he can figure out how to get out of it. He's in a 10 year old SUV with like 200K miles on it, so nothing high end or worth retrieving according to BIL...lol.
