I've noticed in alot of the YA novels I read that the MCs often have unique quirks: girl who wears a different outfit everyday girl who is an old movie buff girl obsessed with a particular book girl who loves the 80s (in present day) and why are they always wearing Chucks?
So, what do you think about these quirks? Do you think they are realistic? I am asking b/c I am writing a YA novel for NaNo and trying to decide if I should give my MC a "quirk."
For the record, quirks don't bother me, but I often think to myself that I have never known a teenager(even when I was one) who had quirks like that, so I feel like there is some degree of not being believable.
LOL, I think they're a lot more plausible in teenagers than adults. Thinking back, nearly all my friends had some topic/hobby/lifestyle they were passionate about (and could out-knowledge an adult) and lived it to the max. It's part of developing an identity of selfhood.
The chuck one is no longer a quirk as often as it is done. And it actually annoys me.
That being said, teens are naturally very self involved. It is a normal, teen phenomenon to become obsessed with one thing in a bid to feel unique. Seems rather realistic.
I like to give all my MC something slightly quirky though. Nothing terribly trite. Just something that maybe gives them a bit more depth and perhaps contributes to a running joke or something sweet from her love interest later on.

I would say that most good novels have quirky characters--otherwise, how do you identify John Smith from Joe Smith? It makes them seem more human--because nobody identifies with a perfect person, right? Or so I suppose.
