::bites nails:: I really hate putting this out there, but I will.
I've been toying with the idea of a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid of a post apocalyptic Earth. The world has been polluted so badly that in an act of self preservation, cities have become sealed off, self contained domes. Travel between cities is achieved through train systems buried deep in the earth, so they're not quite cut off from other people. Technology has taken over every aspect of life, including genetic alteration to conform. Food is synthesized out of basic plants, making it a wholly vegetarian society (most sustainable).
Meanwhile, outside, the world has reset itself somewhat. Plants and animals have mutated. There are humans there as well. Those whose ancestors weren't able to make it to a city in time, and have somehow survived. They have reverted to a medieval societal structure.
The book will be about what happens when the Tech society is finally released to the world through the domes opening. (The domes were sealed by those that built them to open at a time when they thought the world would have balanced enough to allow human population again.)
I need an end point, though. I haven't figured out what the goal will be. The main characters are a man from the city, and a woman from outside.
Pixy, that story sounds awesome! I would totally read that.
What if the complication is that after the dome opens, factions within the city want to close them b/c the outsiders are considered barbarians? You could have some fun with that!

Not sure where I'm going this year. I'm debating a wizardry-type story vs. a shadowrun type story (dystopic future, evil corporations, slum-based mercenaries, etc). Too many ideas, not enough days.

This was something I was thinking about.
The male lead would be someone fairly high up in the hierarchical order, but low enough that he would be one of the first ones sent outside to check the conditions of the world. He'd meet the female lead outside, and progress from there.
Meanwhile, in the city, the lead people would be dealing with panic from the citizens who have been taught that the outside is bad/polluted, etc. With the seals cracked, they're suddenly facing a life that is bigger than the small contained spheres they've known forever. Think mass agoraphobia. In an attempt to calm the citizenry, the leaders are trying to find a way to close the domes again.
The male lead knows that this can't be accomplished (something self destructed in the dome mechanics maybe because the people who built the domes understood human psychology re: wanting to stay where they were comfortable vs. going out and starting new lives?). He and the woman have to convince others to follow them to a new life.
I think I have my story. I just need to figure out some of the events. It's really brilliant, but I won't be sharing because I don't want it stolen. LOL

Yeah, that's part of the reason I was hesitant to post. Whatev's though.
Speaking of stealing ideas, I just found out that a book was published this year that is very similar to my 2008 NaNo story. Like, involves the same main character (who is a real historical figure) solving a murder. I'm sure it's just a coincidence, because I didn't share my story with anyone, but I'm kind of pissed because it ruins my fantasy of publishing my NaNo someday!

I'm just joking. I don't want anyone to think it's lame. Although, I'd probably get some good suggestions if I'd just post it.
But, just in case, you should have a hard copy of your post so you can sue someone in the future should they steal your idea.
I wanna either go with what i posted in the other thread or do a revisionist history about if the counter culture actually took over the govt and we would all be acid dropping, pot smoking hippies.
OR an underdog story about a boy who is ridiculed in school and goes on to build his dream car and wins a lot of races.
