Captain Procrastination here checking in. I have a very vague plot outline but I want to kind of flesh it out a bit. I am scared of someone pinching it on the Nano forums, so here I am haha
At age 7, MC goes to an antique fair with his/her grandparents. There he/she stops at a stall filled with trinkets and strange collectibles. A small pendant catches his/her eyes and s/he convinces his/her grandparents to buy it. Ten years later at age 17, MC has been wearing said pendant everyday since the day it was bought. Until one night when it begins to glow and emanate an entrancing melody.
MC places the pendant around his/her neck and is whisked away to another time/place. There he/she must face his/her greatest fear and try to make his/her way home before time runs out.
Since s/he was with his grandparents, perhaps the greatest fear could involve one of their parents, perhaps a father missing at sea and must get home to save them? IDK.

I was thinking something along those lines to do with MC's parents. I like the lost at sea angle.
I'm thinking the later part of the plot. I have the beginning pretty good, but it needs more pizazz to it. What is MC's greatest fear? Where/when does she go? (not too far back preferably, as I don't want to do tons of research), How much time does he/she have? How do I wrap up the climax of the story?
I'd probably go with his parents being some kind of adventurers, explorers of some sort who stumbled upon some kind of portal. What's been years for him has only been a few days for his parents. The necklace/watch transports him to the same world where he saves them from something scary.
I might even make his grandparents be less than awesome and having helped instill his fear of adventures or something as that's what "killed" his parents. Well except they aren't dead. lol
Bonus points, when they come back, grandma and grandpa could have kicked the bucket. YAY! Maybe whatever s/he found could be one of their wedding rings. IDK.

I'd say it would be more psychologically in-depth if, rather than fears of adventures, it's about facing fears of being left alone in the world. Your parents left you (so, their whereabouts could be unknown); what if your grandparents do too? What happens if you can't find the people you lost? What happens if YOU become your parents and leave people behind?
If you're going with lost at sea, it's going to have to start somewhat further back as it is since nobody gets lost at sea much these days.
