My family rents a house on the beach every 3-4 years. I think we've stayed on Emerald Isle once.
ETA: This will be our first trip as a family, and with a 17 mo old. Do you have any advice? I'm thinking of having Baby E sleep on a twin inflatable mattress on the floor. He's getting to be too big for a pack-n-play.

We used the pack n play up until we moved our toddler to the regular bed (right at 2). I like the containment of the pack n play. I now have him in one of the twin beds with a bed rail (my parents keep a bed rail and pack n play at the house, not sure if your rental has one). The inflatable mattress sounds good, but expect to have a roaming baby. I have seen inflatable toddler mattresses that have sides- I haven't used one but think it's a good idea.
SO cute!! I love her bow. We had a fantastic beach day on Thursday with a friend, but it has been too windy here the rest of the weekend. Stupid tropical storm!! We're hoping to hang out by the pool today-H is off work.

kmart- yes, the house is first row. We love rocking on the deck and watching the water.
liz- we have a designated pack n play for the beach. If I put her on the ground, it would be on a towel, but she's perfectly happy playing in the pack n play. I don't just put her on the beach because I don't want her to eat sand. If a baby eats too much, they'll get diarrhea (my cousin found this out). When my son is playing on the water's edge, I'll take her down and dip her toes in. She doesn't love it, but she doesn't hate it either. She'd rather sit in the pack n play and watch the ocean.

We got a beach tent and I insisted on one with a floor but dh didn't bring it because he didn't think he weather would be nice enough to go out to the beach. I also got a big blanket that sand falls through. Next time...
