I have LOTS of experience, unfortunately. Once my cats got the correct diagnosis of having crystals, a change in food made all the difference. My boy would not eat science diet, but they both like Purina UR. My advice would be to stick with the diet-when I've tried to add healthy foods (Wellness, Wysong) to the mix, the problem comes back. The prescription food will make her cat thirsty, so make sure she's always got fresh water out.
My last cat had crystals, but I think they were oxalate (the ones they have to do surgery to get rid of). There were hundreds. I gave her the prescription food the very recommended and there was never another problem.
(Not ever on this board, but had somewhat relevant experience and wanted to share. Slinking off now.)
My one cat has this problem. We feed him Purina UR, add water to his food, and we got a fountain so the fresh water may encourage him to drink more. He hasn't had an episode in several years *knock on wood*
One of my kitties has this condition here & there, well has had two breakouts of it. He basically started peeing in front of me (little pees) on the couch, dog bed, and my bed--now I realize he was trying to communicate with me that his pee-pee hurt him!
BOTH times this happened was due to a change in his diet and boom, crystals appeared. The first time was due to me putting him on Wellness dry food (which I was so annoyed at because I feed them Wellness wet and my dog Wellness food--but, I did research online and lots of people have complained that their cats have gotten crystals from Wellness dry food, even the formulas made for urinary health!!!) So, he went on he Rx diet from Science Diet for about 4 weeks, until he had no more blood in his urine (the first breakout he had blood, so sad for him!), no more accidents/dribbles out of the litter box, and then, I switched him back to the old Tase of the Wild, which he has been on ever since w/ Wellness wet food.
The second time, it happened when I was giving them salmon vita-kitty jerky treats. After about 1 week, he did the dribbles of pee in front of me again. So, immediately, I got some of the Rx diet and then back over to the TOTW and Wellness wet food with no salmon treats and he's fine.
Some kitties just have a sensitive pee-pee I suppose!!! My other cat has a digestive and urinary system of iron apparently, he eats anything and everything and is always okay!
So, I have a diet for him that works, I put a little warm water in his food and have a FreshFlow water fountain for them. All seems okay.
One of my cats had a lot of problems when she was younger. The Vet recommended using bottled (distilled) water (too many minerals in tap water) and I started using Purina One Urinary Health dry food. I stopped buying the water after about a year, but have kept her on the same food- and haven't had any more problems!
