I have an ipod touch. There's a kindle app, so I downloaded it. I can use my ipod as a kindle then, no?? I can't figure out how to download ebooks and I especially am interested in doing the "loaning" thing so I can borrow ebooks from my dad and friends who have kindles...
You can, but it's going to suck to read on your ipod. The beauty of the kindle is e-ink that is designed to not strain your eyes. I also think the ipod is too small to be convenient.
This book is free today: www.amazon.com/dp/B005AWNQH2/?tag=dealnewscom I would go through the process and "buy" it and it should prompt you to set up your device or provide some kind of instruction.

You can use it, but it's going to be small and sucky. You can't do in app purchase from the kindle app. You have to go to amazon, setup an account and add your device there. Purchase via the web browser and then open your kindle app and it will download the book. The publishers decide which books can be loaned and very few choose to make their book eligible. They can only be loaned once (ever) and have a 14 day time period for lending.
