No, they don't need to be from Santa. L gets to enjoy them either way. A few can be from Santa, the rest can be from them. That's nothing that they need to be pissed about!

I get the setting a precedent thing, though. If Santa presents are unwrapped while other presents are wrapped she would probably pick up on it and remember,

My mom always did Santa presents in Santa specific paper. That's what I do now
And you don't think it'd be odd to ostensibly not get a single present from his entire family?
I would think it would be odd for her to not receive any gifts from the family. Is there a reason they don't want her to know that any of their gifts actually came from them? FWIW, I think you are right and I would tell my ILs the same thing if I were in your situation.
You're right, and you're the mom, so you make the rules. They'll get over it. And I get what you mean about kids picking up on that stuff. They're smart little buggers.
