We got ours via a sale at a local toy store. I'm on mailing lists for a few and they had the same list price as amazon. Once I had a 25% coupon I got them.
I think magna tiles are appropriate for the 3 and older crowd. Would you want to hang on to them that long? Someone may end up getting them as a birthday or Christmas gift.
3 on up? It sounded like kids were using them a lot younger than that, but maybe I'm wrong.
There's no one in my family who would gift Magna Tiles.

Smart. I'll keep my eyes open as I'm in toy stores going forward. Thanks.
I really want to see them in-person. The husband and I really love Legos, lol. I get the feeling MTs will be a big hit in our family.
Anyway, mainly just trying to scope out prices for now. I think I like to price things out so much because I'm a big market watcher when it comes to trading. Ha!
I just got these for DS - he is 2.5. He can do very basic things with them but still needs help. I would definitely not get them for anyone younger. I also would not get them three years in advance. I am sure there will be a new "trendy" toy by that time. You can relax!
Megabloks are good for the 10-24 month old age group if you are into legos
:Y: DS just turned one on Saturday and he loves his Megabloks. He doesn't quite understand how to stack/build with them yet but he thoroughly enjoys knocking the towers DH and I build down. Last night was the first time we saw him trying to build with them.
I just checked out Megabloks on Amazon. Those things are huge! They look like a ton of fun. Thanks for the suggestion. They're so cheap I definitely won't be buying them in advance.

I'm on the lookout for a deal on them, too. I had never heard of them until all of the recent hoopla about them on the board, but they look like something DD1 would love. I'd like to get them for her birthday in two weeks depending on what kind of discounts I can find between now and then.

Agree. There is being prepared and then there is....buying Magnatiles 4 years in advance.
But yeah, they're awesome. DS is 4.5 and after seeing him with them, I think he's just about at the prime age. He constructs most things on his own, but loves for us to help build, and sometimes gets a little frustrated when the magnets fold in on each other (doesn't understand the science behind it yet) so I think any younger could have been problematic.
I think a lot of toys are listed as 3+ so that they don't have to undergo the more rigorous product testing as an infant or toddler toy (choking, etc).
Don't worry cloudbee, you're not alone. I am keeping my eyes out for a sale too!
I feel crazy with my posts sometimes. I just want to start watching prices if I know in the coming year or two I may want to purchase these and tuck them away. Or heck, if there's some amazing deal tomorrow, even. (Though unlikely!) No one ever buys us (and likely not our future kiddo) big ticket items, and they never follow gift advice. We get random junk from family. There's no way someone would ever buy these for us. I want to find them at the best price I can knowing that we're 99% likely to buy them in the near future regardless.

they look really cool! let me know if you guys find a sale too. I know as soon as I show my DH these he is going to insist DD needs them in a couple years so I might as well get them on sale too!

Magnatiles have been around for years, so I wouldn't necessarily call them trendy. I worked in a preschool and we had them in all of classrooms (2-5). They are pretty sturdy and stood up to years of handling. It's interesting to see how popular they are on this board, especially given the price!

I hadn't heard of them until this year, but DD got a set from SIL. She got 32 pieces and it's not really enough to make anything cool. She's 2 (28 months) and needs help to make things right now. She'll probably be more into it around 3.
