My advice is to start out on the generic kind (Target, Costco's Kirkland brand, etc). We started on Similac because I had a ton of coupons. And then DD had all these issues with formula and once we found that she did well on Similac Soy I was way too scared to switch to something else even though I really should have switched to Target's generic soy (but I was terrified to mess with what had been proven to be okay).
We've been on Similac up til now. I buy it at Costco because they have larger packages of them and use can use one $5 formula check on each one. That size tub lasts us about a week. We are about to switch to the Costco generic though as it will save us about $20 a month.
I used target generic with DS and now am using costco generic with DD. Way cheaper than brand names. I used Similac until they were a month or so before switching. Both did just fine. Costco is cheaper here at least.

I used Target's Up & Up formula with both kids. It was around $21 for the large container and they both did very well on it. We used the one that's the generic for Enfamil Gentlease.
They also often have $1 off coupons available on their website.
We have to use Enfamil Enfacare as it's extra calories (DS is a preemie)... best prices for it are at Target. I also get it at CVS sometimes as they give us 25% off the entire store coupons almost every week... so even though it's normally very expensive there, the 25% makes it cheaper than Target.
