H bought me a map poster for Christmas so that we can make a pin board of the places we have traveled. Only problem is that it is massive. 55x39 to be exact and I can't find a frame to put it in.
I know we could go the Michaels/Joann's custom framing but would rather not since they seem to be rather expensive. Anyone know where I can get a frame that size without going the custom route?
Custom will cost you hundreds of dollars, even with a sale, I can assure you. I made a frame for a map we had that was huge. All it took was trim from Lowes, mitre cut on four corners, and glue. Let me see if I can find a blog link.
Here you go: www.jhawks482.blogspot.com/2009/07/oh-places-we-go.html?m=1 If you (or a friend) has a mitre saw, it's a no-brainer to make your own. The only somewhat difficult part was glueing it all together (the back/the frame) because it was so big. But if you plan it out and consider all the logistics, it's quite easy.

Thanks so much. What did you use as a back behind the cork?

Some of the Ikea pre-made stuff is that exact size and comes at $49.99 with art already in it. You could buy the art for the frame. I don't know if they sell that size without art in it, but it would be worth looking into.

It was like fiber board, or something, it's about 1/4 inch thick. It's like bed board, but not. At Lowes (in the wood and trim section) it comes in HUGE sheets and they can cut it down to the size you need. If I remember, it is around 10/15 dollars for the sheet. I took the rest home and painted it with chalkboard paint to make a chalkboard for my kitchen.

We have a map like that, and opted to have my dad build us a frame. We had our map dry mounted at Michael's, then mounted it on MDF + carpet padding behind the frame.
