Yep, you can use the headrest portion. The headrest must be removed when the straps are on the highest setting because the headrest can not use the same slot as the straps.
I took out the headrest insert one time and didn't like the way his head was situated. I felt like he would bounce around so I put it back in. He's 15 lb and we still use it. He was over 11 lbs when we took out the body portion and I only took it out when he looked squished. Another baby at daycare has the same Chicco 30 carset and still uses the head insert and that baby is bigger than mine. I checked out their carset to determine what I needed to do
I didn't realize those infant padding insert things were required for safety.
Are they mandatory at first?
We didn't add anything the carseat, but the Chicco seats had these removable padding pieces (one around the head and one around the waist) to secure him in the seat. I know there are extra padding that is sold at BRU for the carseat but the carseat lady at our birth class said do not add anything extra to the carseats. They are tested and pass based on whatever comes with them and not with extra pads like this: www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12881529
Yes, check the manual. I was itching to pull that infant insert out. It made DD so hot (July baby in Houston :-| ) and she was noticeably happier in the carseat once it was out. I have no idea how you guys are fitting 14lb babies in the seat with the infant insert!
