I'm shocked! On a whim, I decided to try to put E down for a nap in his crib, which he has never slept in (he sleeps in the PnP in our room, but we want to transition him to the crib in 3-4 weeks). He fell asleep on his own after about 10 minutes of babbling to himself. We're using a few sleep props still (swaddling, pacifier, white noise), but otherwise I didn't do anything except set him down. Holy crap. Not counting on it lasting very long since he's a chronic catnapper, but I'll take this over the last six weeks or so in which he'll only nap in motion (bouncer, swing, or car).
Also, I don't think this would have been possible without the awesome baby monitor we just got. I was able to see what his noises were about without stimulating him by going to check on him. We initially bought a cheap video monitor because of the decent Amazon reviews, but it was horrible IMO (InfantOptics) so we returned it. Now we have the AngelCare video/movement/sound monitor (www.amazon.com/Angelcare-Movement-Monitor-System-Ac1100/dp/B004E9SWQ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356641739&sr=8-1&keywords=angelcare+video+monitor), and it rocks. The video and sound quality are superb. Not sure whether we'll use the movement pad, but at ~$160 ("open box" from Amazon Warehouse Deals) the audio/video aspects are still cheaper than comparable options from Motorola or Samsung.
so you inspired me and I decided to try putting Squirms down fully awake tonight. Put her in her crib with the sound machine/projector on. She cooed at the projection for about 5 minutes, then got quiet and kinda wiggled around. By the time the projection turned off at 15 minutes she was asleep! WOW!

I have been so worried about every transition but she's amazed me so far. No problem weaning from the swaddle or transitioning from the RnP to the crib. Makes me feel much better about her starting daycare next week.
Neither of my kids would fall asleep on their own like that until 10-11 months old, after lots of sleep training
I think we got lucky with this guy in the sleep department--he's a total catnapper, but sleeps amazingly at night. He's truly STTN six times so far (11.5-12 hours without waking to eat). Last night was 7:30 PM-6:45 AM, woke to eat, then was out again until 9 AM. Boy loves to sleep. I also made good sleep practices a priority, because *I* love to sleep, and knew we'd all be miserable if I was chronically sleep deprived. Granted I was still at the mercy of our baby's temperament, but thus far E has just been a fan of sleep.
Yeah G loves to sleep, I think it's just luck of the draw. She still takes about 5 naps a day at almost 6 months. Most are 30 minutes long, usually one long one too (60-90 minutes). Then 10 hours at night. Curious how it may change once she's in daycare, but she's only going 2 days a week.
I'm jealous! I can't even count how many times I tried to get dd to nap on her crib yesterday. We only got one 25-min nap and she was out cold when I finally put he down.
