DH got me an iPad for Christmas, which I think is the most expensive gift we've ever bought. I SAH so money is tight, it was a huge splurge. He clearly thought I would love it, but I'm contemplating returning it I have been using his MacBook since my netbook crapped out last year, and he's been using his work laptop. So I know he wants his computer back. I use his laptop 90% of the time while rocking w/ DS. He got me a case for the iPad that lets you use it like a laptop (has a keyboard and whatnot). But touching the screen nonstop to browse the web is annoying. I can't just rest my arm down, it's constantly moving. And tapping tiny little items onscreen while rocking apparently takes more coordination than I have. I have never run into a situation where I wanted a tablet, I like our paper magazines and the games on my iPhone.
Do you think I would want an iPad when DS is older, for games or TV for him, so I should keep it? Am I being a fuddy duddy by clinging to a laptop with a trackpad? I admit I don't like change, but on day 3 of using the iPad I want DH's laptop back
Depending on what you want/need, you could exchange it for an inexpensive laptop - that might put some money back in your pocket. Can you get a refund now that you've had it out and played with it for a while?
I like my iPhone but don't care much for the iPad. That said, I really like my Kindle Fire and I also like the iPad Mini (DH has all the latest and greatest through work). The size of the iPad makes it difficult to use one-handed while nursing, IMO, but the smaller Mini is simple to use with one hand and fits much more nicely in a purse.
Maybe try a Mini out to see if it fits your needs better? Or, return it and get an inexpensive laptop and a Kindle Fire? I do LOVE having my Fire for nursing, rocking, etc.

I am an avid iPad user and have had one for years. That being said, I tend to surf on my phone when rocking or nursing DD, it is a but tricky to hold the tablet while doing so. I'm seriously considering the mini (for work reasons as well). Maybe you could go look at it in store and see if you might want to exchange to that instead?
I don't think a Mini is the answer. I would still have to be touching the screen, which is main aspect I don't like. Plus I'm having enough trouble with the small onscreen items with the full size iPad, a mini would just make it worse. When I rock with DS, I pull the chair up to a desk where the laptop sits. Then while holding DS in the crook of my right arm, I can rest my left elbow on the armrest and reach the trackpad. I have gotten very good at typing one-handed with my left hand. This is how I relax, GBCNing while rocking and I have loved it for 10 months. Now my shoulder hurts from constantly moving my arm to touch the screen.
Rosetyler, I have been spoiled by DH's mac and cannot go back to a PC. The cheapest new Mac is $1,000 so much more expensive than the iPad. That's why DH got me the iPad, b/c we can't afford a MacBook. However, if we return the iPad and the case, and I throw in all my saved up fun money I could afford a refurbished MacBook. That's the route I'm contemplating, but it would leave me with $0 fun money for many, many months as we only have fun money when there's money left over at the end of the month, which seems to never happen.
DH was so proud of the gift, but I also know that for that much $$ I need to like it and use it. So I'm thinking of talking with him about 3 options:
1) Our laptop usage stays the same. We return everything, we each get some fun money, and the rest goes into savings. 2) He gets the iPad and I get his laptop 3) We return everything, I fork over all my fun money and get a refurbished MacBook.
