Can they be used interchangeably? I'm thinking no, but I'm not sure.
I have always used a cheapo clear polish as both a base coat and a top coat, but I've never had luck with my polish staying chip-free for more than a day or two. So in an effort to get my manicures to last longer and look better, I recently bought Seche Vite dry fast top coat (I had seen many of you ladies on that previous icky board recommend it). Can I use it as a base as well, or do I need to buy a separate base coat?
If I need a separate base coat, do you have one you recommend?
Separate. They serve two different functions. A lot of the ladies here... errrr, over there? use Orly Bonder. I picked some up and haven't noticed a huge difference but do like it more than a combo top/base coat I was using (OPI).
The base coat can help adhere the polish adhere to your nail, or fill ridges or what have you. The top coat is like a protector - helps your polish last longer, and/or is quick drying, adds shine.
I have in a pinch used them interchangeably (using a non-quick dry top coat) - but I wouldn't try that with products like Seche or Poshe (I can imagine a big gloppy mess) or with base coats that are specifically for adhering polish to the nail like Orly Bonder or CND Sticky because they make your nail...sticky/tacky feeling.
