This is a result of me telling DH that Target had both the ergos and chicco keyfit possibly on clearance. He truly thinks that people might buy us bigger gear items as gifts and that we should hold off.
So really, did you get the big stuff, like stroller, car seat, ergo, etc as a gift? I know my office has a history of giving the PNP as the office gift, but otherwise I have a feeling we're going to get a shit-ton of little stuff and lots of girl clothes.
Plus I was trying to explain to DH that his family gave us small stuff for the wedding, so I don't think a baby shower will yield different results.
My family all bought us the bigger stuff for our shower with our first.
Sometimes friends will go in together as well. You never know. When is your shower? There is a 90 day return policy right? Just purchase and wait and see what you get at your shower, then return if you don't need what you bought. Of course that will only work depending on when your shower is.

We bought the stuff we wanted during BRU trade in event & kept the receipts.
Infant car seat Pack n play Crib Stroller
If you're finding sales for 30% or more off big ticket items I would buy them now & keep the receipts. (assuming you can afford them & would purchase later if no one gifted them to you)
ETA: The only item we bought that was also gifted to us was the car seat. We exchanged it for an extra base & some other essentials. We did receive other big ticket items at our shower: swing, high chair, convertible car seat, monitor...
We were gifted the stroller (UppaBaby Vista, so pretty big-ticket), crib mattress, and Pack-n-Play. Otherwise? We bought the car seat and carrier (Beco Gemini). We were registered for both, but no one bought them.

We bought the furniture (and lots of other stuff). We were given: stroller, car seat, extra base, snap and go, pnp, baby bath, breast pump (I didn't register for it but my friend is a nurse and got a hospital discount on it), a few clothes (I had boys and people don't give as many clothes), lots of baby accessories. I'm sure we got other large items, but I can't remember.
I'm not counting on any big ticket items from others, so we've been buying stuff as we've seen it/researched over the past few months. My parents usually get my random "stuff" for birthdays and holidays, even after asking specifically what I want. So I doubt they'll gift me any big ticket items.
My ILs may be more generous, but I have no idea.
I did save the bouncer and swing for the registry. If we don't receive those as gifts then we may hold off and get them if we feel we need them.
A friend has a rock and play I might be able to borrow.
The infant carseat is the last item on our list to purchase. We'll order it with Amazon Prime (2 day shipping) within a month of my due date. I didn't want to buy that too far in advance so we can get an expiration date that's hopefully later.
Sometimes I wonder if I've bought too much already - but I'm just not used to being given stuff. Maybe I'll have regrets if I end up with excess, lol.
ETA: We have already furnished the nursery, purchased our stroller, snap in bassinet for stroller, Ergo, cloth diapers, a starter amount of clothing, pretty much a base amount of toiletries we'll need, books, etc.
We got the infant carrier, extra base, snap n go, rock n play, pack n play as gifts. We bought our bob and the ergo. My mom bought our crib and mattress for us.

We received the PNP, swing, infant seat, and stroller. I would probably pick up an Ergo if it's a good deal. I love mine, but I'd be willing to bet that the majority of people don't want to give one as a gift.

I knew my family is good about going off the registry and generous with big ticket items... you know your family and possibly what to expect. If you really think they won't then buy and keep receipts.

The only things we ended up buying ourself were the stroller and a number of different baby carriers I decided I wanted as we went along. We never had a wedding shower, so people went completely overboard at our baby shower.
We bought the crib, dresser, glider, and the infant carseat but were gifted everything else, including our Uppababy Vista. I registered for everything assuming that people would not buy much, but we were lucky and pleasantly surprised.
There will always be sales, so I wouldn't feel too stressed if you have to buy items yourself.
We didn't get our glider, car seat, co sleeper or pack and play as gifts. Of course we didn't register for the car seat or pack and play lol, so I guess technically just the glider and co sleeper.
We got everything else - breast pump, two strollers, swing, bouncey chair, exersaucer, video monitor, ergo, etc.
We knew when registering though which things we would buy if we didn't get them and which things we would hold off on.
We got everything at our shower except our BOB and the breast pump. I might not have even put the bob on there though, because I had the city mini on there and I caught a good sale at land of nod on the bob.
I know we got the carseat from my work and my nice stroller from my Aunts and Uncle. The ergo was from DH's work. I think the PNP was a gift, but I can't remember now! I borrowed the swing and bouncer and bought a cheap exersaucer off Craigslist when she was older.
Baby was born before his shower so we went out and bought his carseat in case he came home before the shower (he didn't). The only big ticket items I remember getting at my shower were my swing and the PnP. We bought all the other big ticket stuff.
Yeah I'm truly wondering if we should just go ahead and buy some of the bigger stuff, especially the city mini gt stroller DH wants.
This is MIL's 12th or 13th grandchild (I'm truly not sure b/c her husband's children have kids from various relationships). She has shown little to no interest in the baby.
So honestly unless my girlfriends decide to buy something large it's going to fall on us. My parents have already been very financially generous overall, so I'm not pinpointing any particular gifts from them and my mom is co-hosting the shower.
I did go to Target anyways today, but the Keyfit they had was the red one and I really want the pink one to match the stroller, so I passed for now. I can always get at least 10% off from diapers.com with it.
We were also lucky and got a lot of big-ticket items: PNP, Ergo, City Mini stroller, etc. Some were from relatives, others were joint gifts from friends. It doesn't hurt to put them on the registry. However, if you're pretty confident you won't get these things as gifts, I probably wouldn't pass up a great deal.
