We got our current chi at a no-kill shelter for a $200 fee that covers vaccinations, etc and some of the shelter's costs. My first chi, I got from a breeder in Ohio for around $300 back in 2002.
The fee they want to charge is to cover the vaccinations.
only vaccinations? and they are charging 600 bucks?? this is classic backyard breeder behavior.
Most shelters charge an adoption fee of around 150 bucks, give or take depending on the dog's story. This covers spay/neuter, vaccinations, and health checks.
There is nothing in this world that would make me pay 600 dollars for a dog when there are millions of them in shelters and any and all kinds of breeds. Sorry.

$600??? Total backyard breeder. I would never pay that ever. I also adopt and do not shop.

For example: I have a cockapoo (in sig) that I got for 60 bucks at a shelter. She is amazing. The other dog in my sig on the right is a purebred shih-tzu. My FSIL paid I think 100 for him. She just got another shih-tzu from a shelter for free because she was so matted and poorly cared for.
I am just wholeheartedly against backyard breeders, sorry. I hate them, and I don't use that term loosely.
If you MUST have a purebred dog from a breeder, do a LOT of homework. A LOT. Only go with a reputable breeder - they are harder to find than you would think.

I agree with you 100%. My 2 are rescues from the local shelter.

Yeah, total backyard breeder. Avoid.
I think anyone who buys a dog/cat should be forced to spend a day in a shelter. If you can look at all those animals in cages needing good homes and still want to buy some super spheshul bred animal then I don't know whats wrong with you (general you.)
Yeah, anyone that buys pure bred animals are horrible people.
I don't think anyone here said that. But with the puppy mill problem in this country, it is pretty irresponsible to not do at least a little research. Pet stores are the biggest problem.
I paid $400 to adopt my lab at a rescue. It covered shots, getting her spayed, microchiped, etc. She was a little puppy, so I don't know if that made a difference in the cost.
This is a pretty typical fee at a shelter for a puppy, depending on the breed. Puppies almost always go for more than adult dogs at shelters.
