Not only that but they can very much tell when something is wrong. Both dogs were acting out right before my mom went into the hospital. She must have been having the strokes when they fought on our walk. Yesterday was a bad day for mom, Kobe wouldn't leave her bedside.

I totally agree. I deal with some mental health issues and when my FI was still living at his parents house, I stayed there sometimes. His dog would come and lay her head in my lap every time I was feeling down and she was near me. It's very calming! My cats do this sometimes too, but they worry more about themselves than me :-P
I'm sorry for your loss- You're so right, I think animals can tune in with our feelings. I think that they want their human to feel better, so they show us extra affection.
I will say, that for me at least, doggy kisses make things better faster than kitty cuddles.

I definitely agree with this. We've been going through a very difficult time recently with a good friend of mine who is like a sister to me in a coma in ICU and my dogs don't leave my side when I'm home. They are 100x more cuddly than usual.
