I'm looking for some good American historical fiction that is close to something like Alison Weir's books or other similar authors. I guess I'm getting tired of reading about European fiction but most of what I find are either westerns or focus mostly on various wars. I'm not opposed to stories set in the west or during a war just not solely about them if that makes sense. I wouldn't mind if its historical romance either. Thanks

I really wouldn't compare any to Alison Weir but here's what came to mind.
Follow The River - James Alexander Thom Based on a true story of a woman in Virginia who was captured by Indians and how she escaped and made her way back to her settlement.
Song of the Lark - Willa Cather My favorite Cather book, about a woman from a small town in Colorado who eventually becomes an opera singer.
Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry It's a Western. But give it a chance. One of my few 5 star books on goodreads.
The Feast of All Saints - Ann Rice Totally not about vampires or anything supernatural. It's a historical fiction, set in New Orleans, about a group of mixed-race people, who fit in neither white society, nor the black slave culture.

Queen of America by Luis Alberto Urrea. It's actually a sequel, but it works as a standalone (I've only read the sequel; my H read the first book, The Hummingbird's Daughter and says it's his top read of the year so far). It's a sprawling, leaving-home-but-finding-a-new-one in America, turn of the century, touring the country, family-centered kind of book. Also pretty damn funny. Both books are based on the life of the author's great-aunt.
