I don't have hardware on my kitchen cupboards and I would never do that again. All the cupboards that I use the most look very worn at the corner where I grab the door to open it. And they are only 7 years old. I think kitchen cabinets wear extra fast because my hands are frequently wet from hand washing when I open them.
Yes definitely get cabinet hardware. The oil and grease from your hands ruins cabinets very quickly. That is why in older homes the worst finish on the cabinets is above the stove because not all of the grease is caught by the fan or it didn't have a fan.

I got decent brushed nickel pulls from Home Depot. Definitely get hardware - I think cabinets w/o hardware look unfinished and sometimes cheap (like the builder didn't want to incur the expense).
