Aesthetic = bachelor pad meets whatever his mom's picked up for him. Lol. It drives him nuts that his house looks like a bachelor pad, he wants it to look more homey.

Buy some cheap frames at the craft store or Ikea. Make stencils from templates online for painting on newspaper/magazine pages/other free or cheap source of paper. Put them in the frames and put the frames together on the wall like a puzzle.

You can also do this with a few small square and rectangle mirrors. It's cheaper than one big mirror and is more visually interesting.
One piece of interesting textile would also work, but you'd have to mount a curtain rod or wire to hang it.
Oh, and if there is an art school near him, students usually sell work cheap. He might even be able to pick up an investment piece.
