Here in Oz. They regularly play shows with cussing in them and I've seen little to no censorship. Just last night someone on the show Masterchef said 'shit' and they played that same part twice. The show airs at 7pm on free to air (aka not cable). Its so weird to me coming from a place where cussing is only seen/ heard on major cable shows (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, etc.)
In the States, I always thought it was weird when they bleeped out the 'hole' but not 'ass.' It happened enough times that I question it being a mistake.
I don't think I've ever heard anything bleeped out here, ever. In fact, I remember seeing a news article where there was some debate over whether to preserve bleeps in shows like The Daily Show where the people talking know they will be bleeped and the bleep may actually be part of a joke. I've run into a few Danes who have a hard time even understanding the concept of a curse word. Try explaining to an 80-year-old Danish woman why her translation of "sheep shit" is actually not appropriate for a children's book. Fun times.
I am not for censorship at all, but now that I have kids I have no issues with certain words not being allowed on tv, at least before a certain time, like they do it in the UK. DS pays attention to everything, even when we think he doesn't.

Yeah, I noticed that just the other week when DH was watching one of the Die Hard movies.
And Rita - it is strange how in the US we're very puritanical in terms of body parts shown, but when it comes to violence? The sky is the limit. Germans tend to edit violence more than nudity. In their crime shows you rarely see someone actually die a violent death or see the aftermath in the morgue, but people might answer the door naked or be walking down the beach naked when police go to question them. I also remember a commercial for butter a few years back in which a naked woman was swimming in a pool (obviously, as if you couldn't figure out that was an ad for butter...).

I am really really weird in that I loathe censorship...unless we're talking about kids. I feel like being a child should be protected, and there are days when I wonder if I will ever let my kids near a television if we're living in the US at that point.
