So when we got Roxie home yesterday I noticed she was sneezing quite a bit and sounded congested when sleeping. At the shelter yesterday, I know a few other dogs had colds, so I think she picked it up. I couldn't get into the vet for her wellness check until Jan. 12. Are there any home remedies for colds or do you think I need to try and get her in sooner to the vet? (They are closed now so I couldn't call until Monday; otherwise it's just emergency vet). She still is eating, drinking, and playing with us.
I also have a kind of related, possibly stupid question. How much is it normal for dogs to sleep? I haven't had one since childhood and can't really remember. She is a black lab, about 1.5 and even though she did run around and play outside today, plus we took her for a walk so I guess that might've worn her out, she's mainly been snoozing on the couch the rest of the day except for a few times when she gets up and follows us around. Is it a side effect of the cold? How much do your dogs sleep?
Thanks in advance. I think I'm going to be a nervous doggie mommy for a little while until I get used to her all her habits and quirks.

Technically since she is now sneezing and congested you need a sick visit at the vet...something they should be able to get you in sooner for! If she is eating and acting okay I would say it could wait until your vet opens. But watch her breathing, she may need an emergency vet if her breathing becomes labored etc. As far as sleep, its a big adjustment going to a new home. Combine that with playing outside and a walk and i'd say its normal for her to be sleeping. I know my dog (one year old) sleeps a lot when he's inside. If he's outside he'll play for hours, but if he's stuck inside he mostly sleeps. I think he's bored

I would keep an eye out to make sure its not kennel cough. If the other dogs had it is is something to keep in mind. I second the emergency vet if anything changes

I called the emergency vet. They said as long as she's eating, drinking and going to the bathroom regularly (and she is) that it's fine to wait until Monday to talk to our regular vet. I will keep an eye on her to make sure it doesn't worsen before Monday. Thanks!

The sleeping part really varies by dog/breed. My current one (mastiff) can go 14+ hours if she plays hard. She is currently staying with her littermate while I'm in the hospital- they play hard, come in take an hour or two nap, then are at it again. until dinner time, then they pass out for the night.
If it is a normal day at home the naps are broken up more (she sleeps a lot). Will still do 8-10 passed out at night.
The mix I had before her napped more than full on passing out. He like to just sit on the couch and hang out between play times.

As an update: we took her in today and she has seasonal allergies (she's been itching a ton), an ear infection and an upper respirator infection She's on ear ointment once a day and two pills twice a day for two weeks. We check back with the vet in 10 days. Poor girl.
Her energy level is still up. It snowed today and she freaked out (in a good way) running to run and roll in it. Hopefully the medicines will agree with her stomach and help knock out these infections.
