So yesterday sucked ass. My best friend flew here, we picked her up at the airport and went to lunch in a what we thought was a safe area near H's office. We were in the restuarant about 30 minutes at noon, came out, H's truck had the driver's window smashed in they stole her luggage, leather coat, her laptop in her luggage, her meds, H's GPS, Ipad, Ipod.
Luckily, H has Ipod and Iphone linked to Icloud and tracking on and the Ipad was located by the police after about 5 hours of us waiting around in a slum district near where the Ipad was tracked. Nothing else was recovered. Of course, no insurance agent or claims agent can be reached today. I believe this falls under our HO insurance. Has anyone had experience with this? So PSA, be sure to turn on tracking on your Apple stuff, be very careful wear you park (even though we were near an ATM with cameras, very busy strip mall and a drive thru for a fast food place) and be sure no one follows you from the airport. We think that is what happened.

Blech. Sorry that happened to you guys.
Where you park is totally irrelevant. This happens in my nice neighborhood all the time. Frankly, it probably happens more in upper class neighborhoods, where people seem to be more comfortable leaving expensive things in their cars. The real lesson is that anything worth stealing should never be left visible in a car. That seems to be one of the most common types of crime around me.
Regarding insurance, your items should be covered. You may need to have a computer endorsement to extend coverage to your Ipad without a limit, but generally computer equipment is still covered as personal property. Your friend's belongings are a different story. If she has insurance, it should cover her items anywhere in the world. I don't think your homeowner's insurance is going to cover your friends items that weren't stolen out of the home (ho insurance doesn't always cover things that don't belong to you even if they ARE stolen from your home).
Hopefully you can reach someone soon who knows your policy. If you look at the personal property section of your policy, it should give you a definition of what is covered.
I am so sorry. What an introduction to your town for your friends. When DH's computer was stolen from a client's car it came from the auto policy IIRC. They located it at a pawnshop because the company had the ID on file and it was reported on the system through the police department so if your friends have the info for their other electronics it can help. Also, my daughter's purse was found in a trash can about a mile from where it was stolen, ID and grandma's earrings still inside. Fingers crossed that your friends' luck is similar.

So sorry to hear this.
Insurance should cover this, you should just call your agent and talk to them about your auto or home policy. If your friend has a homeowners or renter's policy her stuff should be covered.
I know my cds were covered once when they were stolen from a car under my renters insurance.
My friend doesn't have her own home, so no home owner's or renter's insurance, so this concerns me. She lives ship board or with family when home, she is an officer for a major cruise line.
I guess I have to wait to talk to our insurance agent.
I'm sorry that sounds awful so did they catch the thief or just find the ipad?
The ipad was recovered, not sure who was arrested. Hopefully someone! We have to call property crimes tomorrow.
So this afternoon after I posted, a San Antonio number called my friend's phone and she missed the call. They didn't leave a message. She doesn't know anyone here, so we think that someone may have found her suit case, since her number was on the tag. Fingers crossed. I called the police, but they are no help, just told us to keep calling the number. I reverse looked up the number, a land line with an address for an 83 year couple in a decent neighborhood close to our old apartment. They haven't answered but we are going to keep trying. Please, please, I would be so thrilled if she gets her stuff back.

She may be able to claim it under her parents homeowners insurance if they consider her a resident relative in the household.
Your stuff should be covered as people have said if you have comprehensive coverage on the vehicle. It may be subject to a deductible and/or a dollar limit so you may be out of pocket.
Yikes, that sucks! I'm sorry to read about it. I don't think it matters where you park for these things. Anything left in the car is at risk. Even then , my car once got smashed/stolen from when I left absolutely nothing in it (I have been broken into before and never leave anything in the car)--they ripped up the floor and stole the car's computer, which I didn't even know a car had (apparently they all have computers though!). Sorry this happened to you. I hope you get your stuff back our covered by insurance.
I would just make sure it is really worth using your homeowners policy. Insurance companies are known for canceling policies for using it for things like this.
I wouldn't even bother for our stuff, but my friend's had valuable things in her luggage. Laptop, expensive leather coat, shoes, clothing etc...
We were in my husband's company truck, so I doubt comprehensive insurance will help us.

Have you been able to reach anyone that can help?
To clarify, auto insurance NEVER covers your personal property. Even if this wasn't a company truck, the insurance in it would not cover anything but the car.

Pom, that is so interesting that your friend works for a cruise ship. I always wondered how people got into that. Is she part of the sailing/navigation team? What does she do?

Many policies cover personal property, including luggage belonging either to you or a relative while it is in your insured vehicle. The type of personal property covered can be extremely limited, but almost all policies I've seen cover your luggage and its contents (up to a certain limit) and portable electronic equipment.

Not true at all. The states I handle cover up to $250 for ANY personal property that you own that is damaged or stolen.

She is the HR person on board ships for her line. She's been doing it for years, used to work in entertainment and with kid's programs. She worked her way up and has been so many wonderful places. We love sailing with her, it is awesome.
Pom, that is really cool that your friend works on the ship. Thanks for sharing.
Do you have an update from your insurance? I am so curious!
Our insurance will not cover her luggage (much more valuable than our stuff in the truck) but told me that her parent's insurance should cover her losses. She will be going to talk with them when she gets home. Property crimes hasn't returned our calls.

That sucks that your friend's luggage will not be covered.
Have you considered going into the station to meet with someone from property crimes? How frustrating.

We called the main number where it is housed and they say we need an appointment.
That stinks about your friend's luggage! I've learned that no part of this city is safe for stuff. Never leave anything visible. Good luck to her with her parent's insurance. Ugh.
