The recurrence risk of HELLP itself is not that high, but most experts would lump Preeclampsia/HELLP together as HELLP is believed to be a type of preeclampsia. The recurrence rate of preeclampsia depends on how early you developed it the first time. The overall recurrence is about 20% in all comers, but can be as high as 60% if it developed prior to 27 weeks gestation.
There are some things that you can do that may reduce your risk: - have a healthy weight (being overweight increases your risk) - taking baby aspirin once daily at bedtime during your pregnancy (should discuss with your doctor) - regular exercise before and during as long as there are no contraindications - taking adequate calcium in your diet
There are some other more "experimental" things that would only be offered after a discussion of the risks/benefits in women who had early severe preeclampsia.
