gift for phd friend

A friend's gf (that I like a lot, but I'm not super close to her) is doing her phd defense later this week. I'm trying to go to her lecture and I was thinking of bringing flowers.

1. Is it appropriate to bring flowers to that?
2. What should I get her for a congratulatory gift? I was thinking a bottle of veuve clicquot to enjoy later? I was hoping to spend $50 or less (not including flowers)

I think a bottle of champagne is a great idea!

Another would maybe be a gift certificate for a massage or a spa treatment to relax after all her hard work.

how lame! they made her bring food for her own defense!? in our dept their lab plans the party, so it might depend on the department. I can't believe after all that hard work you're supposed to throw yourself a party, haha.

anyway, we all know grad students like alcohol. and I think flowers are perfect!
