A friend's gf (that I like a lot, but I'm not super close to her) is doing her phd defense later this week. I'm trying to go to her lecture and I was thinking of bringing flowers.
1. Is it appropriate to bring flowers to that? 2. What should I get her for a congratulatory gift? I was thinking a bottle of veuve clicquot to enjoy later? I was hoping to spend $50 or less (not including flowers)
While I thought this was really weird, when my friend did her PhD defense a few years back, I remember she had to cook a bunch of food to bring along to her defense to serve to the professors, so if you don't want to do flowers, you could do a box of cookies or a few cupcakes or something to "celebrate" after it is done. I don't know if that's true for all schools/fields, though, so maybe someone with a PhD can chime in?
how lame! they made her bring food for her own defense!? in our dept their lab plans the party, so it might depend on the department. I can't believe after all that hard work you're supposed to throw yourself a party, haha.
anyway, we all know grad students like alcohol. and I think flowers are perfect!
