Our pediatrician recommended we give DS vitamin D. She suggested d-vi-sol, but after doing some research, I discovered that d-vi-sol has a lot of additives. I ended up buying the Carlson vitamin D drops, and we've been using them for a couple days now.
I was hesitant, though, to give any kind of supplement. DS is fair skinned, and we live in Southern California where there is lots of sun. Ultimately, my sister (who is a doctor) convinced me.
I'm curious what you ladies are doing or have done.
We gave Carlson D drops when I remembered. Now, it's summer and he's running around in the sun, so I won't worry about it until fall. I'll start again in September.
Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption. I've never seen any evidence against giving the supplement, even if LO gets enough vitamin D already.
Honestly, I usually forget about it. But we do give it to him when we remember. We also use the Carlson drops because all the something-Vi-Sols are gross on many levels like you said. The multivitamin ones are totally unnecessary, and the literature on additional iron supplements are mixed and sometimes show excess iron as a bad thing, so there's no way I'd use the poly-vi-sol.
Yeah I just can't bring myself to use the poly vi, if for no other reason than the smell. I don't think it would hurt her as opposed to the tri-vi but I agree it's not necessary. I just grabbed the wrong one in my mad rush at the grocery store and wasted $9. For now she's getting a little iron in her tablespoon of rice cereal.
