keep them in cribs as long as possible. the end of cribs = the end of being able to take a shower in peace... the end of so much sanity in your life :0 )
My twins turn 3 in a month - and even though they totally know how to climb out - they are still in their cribs b/c they don't climb out at nap/bed time- and sleep well- so i'm not rocking that boat.
Griffin was put into a toddler bed close to 3y- but one child is totally different than 2. I could also trust Griffin to sit on my bed and watch TV when i showered, etc --- the twins? i can't trust them with anything- b/c there are two of them (plus older brother) all they do is get in trouble when they have freedom and i can't see them for 5 minutes.
Not until absolutely necessary! We even still have them in sleep sacks (they'll be 2 in August) to discourage any thoughts of climbing out of their cribs.

we moved the girls around 2 years, 8 months...but only b/c they were climbing out routinely and sitting perched on the top playing "seesaw"....I would have kept them in longer if I could have...
We moved them soon after they turned 2. They were not ready for the switch but they were climbing out of their cribs and I was so afraid of broken bones. So if they are not climbing then I would keep them in cribs as long as you can.
My boys are in seperate rooms so we put baby gates on their bedroom doors and baby proofed their whole rooms. They have been good in their beds for awhile now but it took months to get them used to them.

We're getting ready to next month when DH comes home for a visit. One will get the top bunk, too. Makes me a smidge nervous, and we'll likely be installing a net around the thing except for the stairs.
We did it at 2 1/2. My girls were climbing out, which was not a problem for me, but when they started climbing into each others cribs and fighting, that was a problem.
They had not problems overnight, but it meant saying bye bye to nap for them. All they wanted to do during nap time was play and rough house in their room. The day I found my smaller twin sitting up in the top shelf of their closet, after she used her dresser to climb up like a ladder, it was time to give up the nap. It was rough at first, but once we were all adjusted I prefer the no nap because they go to bed so much earlier.
When we did go to beds I think it was easy at night because they were old enough to understand the bedtime rules (stay in bed, close your eyes and go to sleep). They would not have understood or followed them before 2 1/2 years old.
Mine are 2.5 and we just switched them over a few days ago. We tried months ago and it was a disaster. I did't want to switch them over until 3 but William kept climbing out of his crib and into Jacob's crib. So far they haven't taken naps successfully but they have slept well at night.
Mine turned 3 in January and are still in cribs! I honestly didn't think we'd last this long but they've never tried to climb out and they like their cribs. We have all their bedding ready for the transition but when I asked them a month ago, they both said they didn't want big boy beds; they like their cribs! I think we'll go ahead and transition in a month or so though.
