Summer Camp. I'm not talking about one or two weeks of sleep away camp as an older kid, tween, teen. I'm talking about my neighbor who is sending her 4 year old to camp 5 days a week, 9-3 for 6 weeks this summer. It seems to be the norm around here, for 5 years and up, to do, at minimum, several weeks of day camp. Many do 6-8 weeks, which is the whole summer. No, these aren't day care/working parent situations.
I just don't get it. 1. It costs a fortune. 2. Your kids are in school all year, don't they need a break? Don't you wan to see them ever? 3. When do they get to play?

What kind of short summers do you people have? DS's preschool ends next week. It doesn't start again until after Labor day. That's 14 weeks. I've got him scheduled for four non-consecutive weeks of summer camp this summer, because honestly, he is going to be devastated that there is no school and be bored by mid-June. Camp through our county parks & rec isn't all that expensive.
Summer for kindergarten and up is about the middle of June until the day after Labor Day. Preschools & Nursery Schools get out about Memorial Day.
There is a very cheap Parks & Rec program, but usually that is used as a daycare option for K & up. The P & R preschool program runs 9-12, 5 days a week for 4 weeks.
ETA: I said 8 weeks, and I just counted, the church nursery schools are about 14 weeks, the public schools and Jewish nursery schools are more like 11-12. I exaggerated on that part, but it still seems like a lot of camp to me.

I'm sending my 3.5 year old to summer camp at the rec center it's 4 weeks, 4 days a week, 3 hour days. I almost did 8 weeks. It's CHEAP . My kid LOVES school and he has some delays so I need to keep him engaged and around kids in a somewhat structured environment. We're also doing a soccer class, a tennis class, an art class and a social skills class. I'm sure some think I'm over scheduling but he needs it.

My oldest 2 are going to 5 weeks of summer camp each (not consecutive weeks). 9-noon for 4 or 5 days a week. They would be bored if they didn't do something. Honestly, I'm a little jealous of the fun stuff they get to do - nature camp, art camp, VBS, Girl Scout camp for DD...they're both really excited. They're also doing soccer and DS is continuing speech services. Even with all of that, we still have plenty of time to do stuff together and days to be lazy or hang out in the backyard.
