This is a post and run because I'm off to the gym but I'll check back later!
Once my two year old is asleep, he sleeps for 10 or 12 hours at night and once he is down for a nap he sleeps for two hours straight but it's getting him down that is the problem. Sometimes it takes me over an hour to rock him to sleep. I've gone this long without CIO, is it too late to do it now? What sleep train book should I read?
You could try CIO now if you want. Otherwise, I'd recommend Healthy Sleep Habits for reading material. When we make changes to the routine, sometimes it's gradual and others it's cold turkey.
It sounds like it's time to stop rocking him to sleep. What does your current routine look like? Maybe we could help you find ways to re-shape it into something that works for you and DS.
If C won't go down for a nap the first time I try, I usually give her a snack or something and try again. It seems she is more willing to nap after eating.

yea at that age you're going to have to do some version of CIO
my save our sleep book recommends just laying them down in the crib, saying it's time for bed & leaving for 10 mintues
if they are still screaming then, go in and stay until they go to sleep but do NOT pick them up keep laying them down until they give up and just stay laying down (this can take a LONG time, but will get easier each time) then you can pay their back until they are asleep, or eventually just hold your hand there or stand there
after a few days of this your dc will get it - but give it a good 3 days of hell before you get message through - it's totally worth it to have that hour back though and for your child to know how to put themself to sleep!
We had to CIO last month. DS is almost 3. It sucked and included pounding on the door and screaming "open this door right now, Momma!" but it worked. We had tried tons of other options and this was our last resort. it took 4 nights. It was worth it.
Thanks for all of the advice! Our current routine is dinner, bath, book and then rocking him to sleep while I cry in my head, why won't you fucking sleep, for two hours.
