I'm interested in getting one to help with all our hardwood floors in between cleanings. I am not looking for it to be the only source of cleaning floors. Thoughts?

Love it for just what you said the in between cleanings it does bump into everything and it does take about a hour to do our small house but its so much easier for us to stay in control of the dog hair at our house. You might also check out the mint vacuum.
Check out the Neato instead. I have a Roomba and a Neato, and the Roomba's okay, but I loooooooooove my Neato. It uses lasers to map out the room, has way better suction, and is just all around awesome.
We have one and we like it, but now that the novelty has worn off, we rarely use it. It def works, but we would find clumps of fur on area rugs when the Roomba would go from the hardwood to the rugs. It isn't bad, but since you still have to vacuum, it isn't as great as some may think. Maybe if it was cheaper...
I got one in September and it's made a huge difference in my floors. (Admittedly, I didn't vacuum that frequently before.)
The model I have can be programmed to run at specific days/times. Mine runs once every weekday. I definitely recommend making sure the model you get has this, since it's kind of loud to run while you're home (the machine itself is loud, and it bumps into everything as it goes).
I'm very happy with it, but it's not perfect. Mostly because it can't do my entire house in one run, and it does get stuck sometimes (like under my bed -- now I usually think ahead and use the sensors to block it from going there). And mine doesn't always return to the base to recharge. But it's still awesome.
We have the the Neato XV-14. It's not as awesome as I thought -- I thought I would be able to run it at night but I can't because it gets stuck pretty often. It's pretty nice though.

I love mine. We had to "Roomba proof" our apartment after we got it, which is to say that we removed from the floor all the things it commonly gets stuck on. It normally finds it's way home now and is on a timer and runs everyday when we aren't home, so all we do is empty it 1-2x per week. And only occasionally we have to find it when it gets itself lost. I've hardly run the regular vacuum in a year (basically only when something spills). However, I do have a model with "lighthouses", which I think makes a big difference.
We just moved into a two story house and I'm thinking about getting a second one for upstairs.
We don't have one but, after babysitting in a house that has one, I think we probably won't get one until we have grown kids. The toddler could not keep his hands off it. It would undock, spin around, scare the kid and then I would have to re-dock it. Which does not answer your question at all, except that, as someone who really wanted one, I am over it.
We have a Neato Pet & Allergy. We also have two large dogs. I set it to run every other day while we are at work. It does a great job of keeping both our hard surface and carpet clean. I still vacuum with our Dyson once a week.
