DS got a children's bible, he got some cute lift the flap books about church, he got some cards with $20 in it and a picture frame. I think something small is fine.

I would give money but also don't feel like you HAVE to give a lot - go with what you can afford.
My niece was baptized this past weekend. I was the godmother and I gave her what many people would probably consider a "cheap" gift for a godchild (I gave a Lenox piggy bank and $50). I had to buy a VERY expensive plane ticket and so this is what I could afford. I'm not losing any sleep over it - being there and giving something, even if small, is good enough.
Bapitisms are religious events, so a card with a note is very nice and suffiencient. After a few bibles, even children's bibles, it gets a bit redundant. If you have extra funds, cash/check is nice, too. if you want to give a wrapped gift, an inexpensive children's book (maybe a Veggie Tale theme) would be more than enough.
