The guy in the Benjamin Moore store told me a horror story about someone using Behr ceiling paint and the ceiling just came tumbling down in pieces. This thought has been haunting H and I, but is it really that hard to paint a ceiling? The BM guy definitely seemed like he was out to turn us off of any other paint brand.

I cannot honestly imagine any brand of paint causing a ceiling to fall without there being serious underlying issues. In my opinion, your BM guy is full of bull-hockey.
that being said, painting a ceiling is a royal PITA. You'll need an extension pole, lots of tarps (unless you don't need to protect your floor/walls) and depending on what kind of ceiling texture you have, a very "puffy" roller.
Maybe the ceiling was popcorn ceiling? I can see that happening if the person went over it a few times wet. But I would assume that would happen with any paint.
Painting a ceiling is a pain just because you are working over your head. Muscles that you didn't know you have will hurt.
I don't think it's a specific brand of paint that would cause a ceilin to come down though. I agree that maybe it was a popcorn ceiling or something was wrong with it to start with. My uncle did paint their smooth ceiling to find it started to "pop open". Apparently the ceiling had been wallpapered and that cracked when it was painted. I'm not sure if they removed all the wallpaper on the ceiling or what. We have a few wallpapered and painted ceilings and I'm not painting them but we did drywall over the hallway wallpaper I've always just used the "ceiling white" in Olympic or in valspar.
Um what? My H and I have painted ceilings in every room with Behr paint, and nothing like what you described has ever happened. My ceilings look just fine- zero crumbling. It's really not that hard. Sure it can be a little messy, but nothing catastrophic. The BM guy is full of shiz.
What? Your paint guy must have a bridge he'd like to interest you in.
Despite being an expensive-paint-devotee, I use cheap paint on ceilings. Often Valspar, because Lowe's is close.
I spend the money on expensive wall paint because it wears well - which I'll put up with for years - and not how it goes on, which takes < a day. Since the ceilings don't get touched, fingerprinted, bumped into, etc., I don't feel the need to spend the $$. So far it's worked out just fine.
I do love the ceiling paint that goes on lavender when wet and dries white. So much easier to see where you've covered. Valspar and SW both make versions of it; I'm sure other companies do as well. Valspar's is about the same price as regular ceiling white.
Yeah, I agree with everyone else. We have had to repaint all the ceilings in our home, and even retextured some of the rooms. It may not be easy working over your head & having paint splattering on your face, but nothing horrible.
Thanks everyone. Yeah, I kind of thought it might be a bunch of BS. We must have looked like "Behr people" or something, because he kind of just went on a rant. I was buying two gallons of Aura so that I could see what a $65 can of paint would do for my life.
Our recessed lights just went in today and there are a few holes we have to patch in the drywall before we paint. There isn't a lot of furniture in the room just yet which is why I'd really prefer not to pay to have it painted when we could just move everything and do it in a weekend.

We are painting our ceiling in the master right now. The previous owner did a crap job at patching a spot on the popcorn ceiling and that part did come tumbling down, but the rest was fine. It had nothing to do with the brand of paint (we used the cheapest stuff they have at HD) and everything to do with whatever miss previous home owner did to "fix" that part of the ceiling.
If you have popcorn ceilings just don't be too heavy-handed with the paint and you should be fine.

I have also painted 6 ceilings with Behr paint and have not had any fall down. To make your life a little easier, get an extension pole so that you are not always on a ladder.
