Hanging without fellow bridal party members, we discussed and cow dress is a go.

I've decided that the bride's reaction is worth any bother of making or wearing said dress. The possibility of drunk hillbillies in the bar (wedding is in pennsyltucky) hadn't crossed my mind, and doesn't really bother me now that I've thought it through.

I'm chubby. MOH is rather chubbier. We're also both kinda mean and I frankly pity anybody who says something to our faces. People laughing behind our backs...well...eh? I won't know, so I don't care.

But now we need fabric. I've found several options of basic quilting cotton, which would work fine for the guy's vests, but not so much for sundresses, right?

But cotton is not bad in theory, right? So how do you tell online if something will work for clothing? like this:

The only clearly apparel fabric in cow print I've found is a Charmeuse Satin but I'm not doing slinky cow dress. THAT is where I draw the line.

What am I looking for here?

Have you guys decided on the style of a dress? The style/pattern may dictate what fabric you can use. Most patterns the fabric you linked would work. Depending on how sheer they are, you may need to line the dresses.

One of the other girls has offered to do the sewing, and I think she has a pattern in mind, but I haven't seen it. From her description I'm picturing something like thisish:

to clarify - I know that a basic cotton would work for a simple little dress pattern like that, but what i'm asking is if there is any way to tell from just looking at a listing online how that fabric is going to feel/lay. Like...threadcount for sheets. I'm guessing no, but figured I'd check.

Quilting cotton will work just fine for dress sewing and anyone who says otherwise is a fabric snob.

But if you could find a rayon challis for that, it would flow better.

ah! Ok, awesome. Somewhere along the way I'd gotten the idea that quilting cotton wasn't any good for other stuff.

I've never sewn clothing intended for real use (just costumes) so I hadn't tested that theory.

It totally depends on what you're sewing. Quilting cotton doesn't have much drape so it won't work for certain styles, garments or features. But for a summer dress, it's fine.

I have no idea why you are making cow dresses, but quilting cotton will work.

As a fat kid, "drape" scares me. Structure is safe when you can feel what you're buying.

kc - it's for a wedding I'm in. The bride has a thing about cows and joked during bridesmaid dress shopping that she was going to put us in cow dresses. So we're going to try to slap together some cow dresses for the rehearsal and surprise her. Guys are getting cow patterned vests. I was hesitating before, but I've come around to thinking it's funny enough to be worth it.
