I just got into a conversation about Dr. Oz w/ my aunt, who likes him and finds him to be very informative. I have a general impression that he's a bit of a quack, but I'll admit I don't know why/can't remember what gave me that impression. So, what's your beef, if any?
I don't follow him but he strikes me as a mixture of legit and quack. He got me to start using a neti pot (brilliant) but I think his diet advice can be shit. I once saw him say something about women losing weight more easily than men because they get up and do dishes after dinner rather than plopping down in front of the TV. Women don't lose weight because they do the fucking dishes.
I do sometimes get sucked into watching his show, and I always wonder what possesses people to go on that show asking their TMI questions for the whole world to hear. My mom bought me one of his books because she think she is the shit.
I like the way he explains functions of the human body in a way that makes sense. However, I don't like the way some people take everything he says as gospel rather than going to their doctor. My mom always says, 'Dr. Oz said...," and I respond, "Dr. Oz doesn't know YOUR personal history. He doesn't know what medications you are taking, he doesn't know your situation. Take everything he says in stride until you have discussed it with your doctor." And then mom gets mad at me.

My BIL allegedly had an appointment with him at his private practice. (BIL has a rare chronic heart condition.) He was called by Dr. Oz's receptionist and told be had and appointment with Dr. Oz and that Dr. Oz had treated other patients w/ the same condition as BIL. Turns out he had an appointment with one of Dr. Oz's colleagues, who knew nothing about BIL's heart condition and wanted to basically redo a ton of tests that would cost thousands of dollars.

edit: Darn, I had the best picture. It was a peanut shaped like a duck. Except it was on https, so apparently I can't embed that.
Quack and a nut! Yes, he has a legit medical background, so if he's talking about something like heart function, he knows his stuff. However, he embraces all sorts of woo and quackery. At least he encourages vaccines.
Overall I like him, but my beef with him is that he gives a lot of advice that's out of his realm of expertise. He's a surgeon, and not a primary care doctor. He recommends that people get all kinds of labs done that may not be covered by their insurance, and don't have a clear diagnostic purpose. Then, they get pissed that their doctor won't order them and feel they're receiving substandard care. I think he does a good job of explaining diseases and I usually agree with his nutrition advice though.
Does anyone watch the show The Doctors? Why are there so many shows with Doctors giving advice to the masses?
That hot doctor? The one from Vail? He's worth that entire show.
Anyways. I was listening to Oprah on the radio the other day and oz was on talking about diabetes. 10 years ago..everything he said about diet, food, exercise etc are the hot topics we discuss now. He was telling people that high fructose corn syrup was in everything and it was affecting us. Ten years ago. I had to give it to him. He was right on.

My husband has met him - he did his uncle's heart surgery about 10 years ago, when he was just an occasional guest on Oprah. Back then he liked him and respected him - being a surgeon, etc.
Now every time we see a minute of his show we are shaking our heads- he has turned into such a hack. It's a sad excuse for a "doctor's" show.... but yeah- i'm sure he's making tons more money, with so much less stress (and liability)... so I don't know if i can blame him.

My mom DVRs his show every day. Whenever I visit after I put DS to bed, she wants to watch it.
I cannot watch that much poop talk. Like I just can't. Plus, he's not as direct with celebrities as I would like. I feel like he totally softballed Rosie O'Donnell when he could've really helped.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
