My H saw the pic earlier and thought it was a joke. Seriously though what else were the passengers supposed to do? It's not like there was a cop on board to stop him and I doubt anyone had any better way to restrain him.
1. What passenger brings duct tape in their carry on from Iceland to New York?
2. Where was the flight Marshall?
3. Wouldn't the flight staff protest a passenger vigilante group moving to tie this person up? I sure as heck would if I was working on that flight, I don't want to be sued!

In an international flight there is no air marshal. The flight crew is responsible for the safety of the passengers. Allowing passengers to do this might openthem up to getting sued but they may not have been able to restrain him on their own. Also if the flight crew had restrained him they would also have opened themselves to a lawsuit and dependiing on the airlines policy they may have been at risk of losing their jobs as well. It was a no win situation for the crew

It sounds like the flight crew provided the tape and plastic thingies.

In Icelandic news (not English) it was done at the behest of the crew who could not restrain him (I've seen these crews. Girliest women ever and girliest men, too lol). The flight attendants provided the tape and the plastic zip ties. Both of these articles are kept on the flights in case of situations like this, Icelandic spokespeople have said.
ETA: IcelandAir DID press charges and the man was arrested. IcelandAir always presses charges in events like this. In DH's words: "How does the US media get things so wrong?!"
ETAA: He was arrested, escorted to the hospital by 8 cops and is being sent back to Iceland once he is past the alcohol poisoning effects (He is an Icelandic citizen). Read a much better source with more details.
Also, Google translate is really funny when it comes to Icelandic lol
