Well, there is always the Marriott marquis in Times Square ut it is expensive. I've stayed in the Ramada Plaza New Yorker hi bis across from Madison Square Garden. It was nice for a NY hotel.
I stayed at the Novotel just off of Broadway. I found it to be very clean, nice and a convenient location. The only issue woulda that I found not many things in that area were open very late since everything seemed to cater to the broadway crowd. It was also very "touristy" but I personally liked that and frankly, what else would you expect when staying in that area?
We were there 4 nights. We did some random hotel near ground zero then 2nights crashing with a cousin on the upper west side then our last night in the mariott marquis times square. It was cool! The times square hotel was crazy pricey but we used points from a cc to pay half i think. Totally worth it for 1 night. I also liked moving around the city b/c we explored so much more that way. Moving luggage was a pita though.
I never stay in Times Square... sorry. But if you don't mind leaving that area a bit, the Trump Soho may be my favorite hotel ever. Get a balcony room. The views are amazing!!!
