I'm starting my first Whole 30 tomorrow, and if it goes well I'm hoping to maintain this way if eating hopefully with some dairy though! Any tips or fab recipes? Did anyone get "carb flu"? I'm so excited!!!!
I didn't experience "carb flu" or many of the first-week mood swings some people get. Mostly I just found myself thinking a lot about food that I couldn't have, even food that I don't like (like fudge! blech! why would I crave fudge in a world where pie a la mode exists?).
I just started my second Whole30 on January 1st, with one exception: I'm using 2 tbsp of heavy cream in my coffee each day. I couldn't stand the coconut-milk-in-coffee, it was just gross. Jen is doing it with me this time, which is a huge challenge for her since she basically hates vegetables, and wants to eat rice at least once a day. I think I mentioned on here before that my mom did it with me in November, and she was able to go completely off insulin and Metformin and all of her little aches and pains - including waking up at night with a tingly hand - have disappeared. She has kept it up about 80% since it officially ended on Thanksgiving, and she's still feeling great and not taking insulin or Metformin. Her kidney and diabetes doctors are thrilled (and shocked, since they almost never see anyone go off insulin).
I typically do either eggs and veggies for breakfast or an apple with almond butter. I do a lot of salads for lunch w/ tuna or chicken and homemade mayo dressing. Definitely do the homemade mayo, and make or buy ghee. Both add tons of flavor and some good fat. I love dates for an evening treat. A baked, mashed sweet potato w/ ghee, vanilla extract and pumpkin pie spice is delish.
Just a note, I don't stick to the grassfed/pastured/etc meat rules. It's just too expensive for us right now. Both my mom and I had great success with regular meat (and even sausage and bacon that wasn't totally compliant).
One other note: My period was heavier and longer the month I did Whole30, and my coach said that is pretty common. I don't know if that side effect would go away if you kept it up for a longer period. It was annoying, but obviously not annoying enough to keep me from doing it again.
I did it through my gym - it was a gym-wide 30-day challenge. We each paid $30. We kept a daily food, exercise and relaxation diary on Google Drive that she could access, and she provided feedback and suggestions on it, and answered questions and provided ideas/recipes/support via email (or at the gym). We earned points for a bunch of different stuff - daily tracking, trying new recipes, shopping at a farmer's market, foam rolling, doing any "unplugged" relaxation activity like reading or playing games, etc. Then at the end of the challenge, half the money we paid went to the top three point earners.
