Getting a new driver's license is apparently a giant pain.
I don't have sufficient proof of identity because I don't have my birth certificate, and only a valid passport will suffice. Mine expired 6 weeks ago.
I swear that the last time I did this, all I had to do was surrender my out-of-state license and fill out a form. This time, I need my birth certificate, Social Security card, current driver's license, and lease.
It took me three times to get a valid ID in Washington (state). I had trouble getting proof that I was a WA and US resident (because apparently a valid out of state license is not proof). They required three bills to prove residancy, but wouldn't take online bills. I swear it was easier to proove my US resendency to the social security office than to WA state.

Somehow a certified high school transcript from anywhere in the U.S. counts as proof of identity, but neither an expired passport nor an out-of-state license does. CURSES.

That is really dumb.
Can you order a copy of your birth certificate online? I had to do this once. It was maybe $25 or $30 but obviously worth it.

Certified high school transcript! well, everyone has those lying around right!?
This is why voter ID is so freaking ridiculous, because see how many hoops you have to jump through to get a dang ID.
RIGHT?!
H should have a copy of my birth certificate at home, so he can send that to me once he gets back there. But geez, D.C., if you want me to get my new license and register my car within 30 days of residency, maybe you should just settle for a blood sample instead.
I do actually have a bunch of original college transcripts lying around (although I'm not sure if they count as "certified"), but that is from the list that requires 2 things, and I don't have any of the others.

Amen. It's hard enough for people who have the resources and time to gather these documents, but think of all the people (particularly the elderly and lower income) who simply can't do it?
