Yesterday H and I found a lump on Violet's back. We brought her in for drop in hours at the pedi this morning and the doctor isn't too worried. He believes it's probably a lipoma and referred us to a pediatric dermatologist. We have an appointment on the 23rd.
They weighed her at the appointment and she was 16 lb 9 oz, which makes for a gain of 4.5 oz since her 6 month appointment, close to 3 months ago. We didn't even discuss that because we were focused on the lump. I think we'll address it at her actual 9 month appointment next Monday.
Also, she woke up this morning with her first cold and is super stuffy and whiney. Poor baby.
Oh man! I'm glad the lump is harmless! I'm sorry about the gaining problem; how much were you hoping for/expecting?
Sent from the future.
I don't really know exactly, I just know at our last appointment the doctor said her weight gain was okay, but really slowing so we'd look at it again at 9 months. According to Kellymom, they should still be gaining 2 - 4 oz per week at this age. That seems like a lot though, right? Anyway, that would mean that in the past few months she should have gained a minimum of 1.5 lbs.
Lincoln had a small lump on the back of his head a few months ago and it ended up just being a swollen lymph node. I'm sorry about her not gaining a lot of weight. Is she really active? That usually cuts down weight gain quite a bit. Hope you get some more conclusive answers at your official appt!

Tyler has a lump on his back and we were referred to the pediatric dermatologist. It turned out to be either a hemangioma (like a Strawberry birthmark) that is under the surface so you can't see the color or a lipoma. Tyler does have multiple hemangiomas like the one on his forehead. If it is a hemangioma it will go away with time, if it is a lipoma we will look to see what it is like in another year. He is almost 100% certain it is a hemangioma.
Just so you know, we see an excellent dermatologist out of Yale and he said that almost always, they are hemangiomas in babies and not lipoma.
If you have any questions, let me know! We have definitely been there!
Foozle - what is the size of the one on Tyler's back? V's is about the size of a prune. She doesn't have another one any other place on her body. With hemangiomas, are babies likely to have more than 1? Did he say anything about it growing in size? I don't like the placement of it - right between her spine and shoulder blade. I feel like that could cause a problem if it grows at all. I reallllly hope it just goes away on it's own before the 23rd!

That's great that L's was just a lymph node. Was he sick and that's why it swelled? How long did it take to go down?
As for being active, she doesn't crawl, but her body is literally in constant motion! So, I agree that is definitely playing a role in the weight gain.
Glad to hear the lump is likely nothing and sorry about the weight gain. It seems like so many mamas are concerned about that lately (myself included), so it has to be somewhat normal for the gain to slow at this age. I know that doesn't help much though. Hopefully pedi isn't too concerned.
And boo for her cold. The best thing we found to help Edie's stuffiness was the steam from the hot shower.

Tyler's is about that big also. It is just to the right of his spine about 1/2 way down his back. He does have a lot of hemangiomas (18? of different sizes, I believe) but anything more than 2 is considered a lot and it is very rare. Without any that are visible, it is still very possible that it could be a hemangoima.
We went through all of the different possibilities of what a lump could be in a baby. The dermatologist said that as long it is not a hard lump it is usually nothing to be concerned about.

That is very reassuring! It's definitely not hard, so that is great to hear.

My LO is kind of a porker but gains 1-2 pounds a month and has stayed at the same % since 4 months. So that is probably a good average but as always, there will be plenty above and below that figure.

He wasn't sick but my pedi said sometimes a parent, DC provider, etc. just sneezing or coughing near them can cause lymph nodes to swell up. He also said as long it feels squishy or jelly like, then there's no reason to worry. Lincoln's went down within 2 weeks.
That's probably the main reason her weight gain has slowed! I was really small as a baby and was always off the charts for weight. At 1 year old, I barely weighed 19 pounds.

I didn't read the other responses but if its a lipoma it's seriously no big deal. I worked in derm for 5 years and we saw these all the time. I'm sorry it's been a stressful day!

I'm glad the lump is nothing and I hope she feels better soon. As for the weight gain, I'm sorry. I guess it's good tht they didn't freak out about it. I feel like this is actually very common bc I keep reading about similar situations. I'm sitting in the parking lot of the pedi now (while Viv sleeps - don't tell Laura's BIl) and my stomach is in knots over the weight gain. I will let you know what try say.
I'm sorry this is all happening at once! I hope both of your appointments go well and V's cold goes away soon, too! We're dealing with a cold too and it sucks.
Thanks for the love, girls! I really do appreciate the support considering this isn't the type of thing I can reach out to people on FB about. And where else would I find several other people who have dealt with similar issues? I'm pretty optimistic. I think if the pedi was worried he would have made sure we got in to the dermatologist faster. And also, he wouldn't have referred us to a derm, right? It's definitely making me thankful that I'm home this year so I can easily get her to these appointments.

Praying it's nothing!! And that her cold disapates soon. Poor V! I think she's just a petite girl, and she's moving and shaking these days, so that could explain the slow growth. Hugs mama, what a rough day!
Spaghetti, I also hope your appointment goes alright too! Thoughts and prayers your way too!

Ugh, stressful stuff! I'm glad the lump seems to be nothing to worry about. I'm sorry she hasn't gained more, I know you've been working hard to try to get her to gain more.
