Mostly as social networking tool for work, but I also am following some celebrities and just having fun with it.
I have two questions:
1. How do people find you? Are there people that just add everyone that comes up in their suggestion feed? Within a few hours I had a follower from London and the another Iowa and I am in SC. Just curious about this.
2. More importantly, how do you get more followers? The tips say to get more people following you, you need to follow more people. I am currently following 70 and have 14 followers. I don't have many friends or family on Twitter - they all stick to Facebook. What can I do to get more cred?
I've seen people post their Twitter handle on Facebook. Many people use both social media forums, so it's a good way to get your friends to follow you. Another way is to respond to tweets. When someone you follow tweets something, asks for an opinion, whatever, engage them in conversation. Their followers will be able to see it and if they find you interesting they might follow you, too. And yes there are people who follow everyone as well as spam followers. You can block these people.
To get more followers, tweet. Also use the hashtags (#) to group your tweets. For example, if you want to tweet about a TV show, use that show's hashtag. People who use that hashtag will see your tweets and may follow you back. Also, look at your settings and make sure people can retweet you. When they do, your tweets will show up in their feeds and their followers can follow you back if they want.
In short, be interesting. Engage in conversation, post pictures, use the hashtags and tag others in your tweets (using @ followed by their handle). It's actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

I agree with everything Bubbles said. For #2, sharing interesting news stories and articles can be a good way to get "more cred" as you put it. There's nothing wrong with tweeting that you need a coffee because it's Monday morning, but if that's all you tweet, probably only your IRL friends will care. If you are saying and sharing interesting things, people you don't know who happen to see your tweets might decide they want to keep up with your feed.
If you really want to get into some of the communities, there are different chats. Usually at the same time once a week, someone will host for example a travel-related chat that has its own hashtag. "Hosting" usually means that one or two tweeters with a big following tweet a series of questions, and people participating in the chat share their answers with the hashtag. Everyone can follow the hashtag, and lots of people in the chat will RT others' answers, so it's a good way to interact with new people and gain new followers in a specific area.
