I'm navigating this too and so far, am unsuccessful. I used Ponds Dry Skin cream for years, which costs like $5, and suddenly, it's not working as well for me anymore. (Not only do I have dry skin, but I live in a dry climate with very harsh winters). I have so far bought an arsenal of other drugstore products and they are all just meh as well. I keep reading all of these things online that we technically shouldn't need anything more than Cetaphil or something, but why are they not working for me???
I also did something dumb (?) and purchased a sample of La Mer b/c I was curious, and have to say that it really does work a LOT better than anything else I've tried so far. Only I am not sure if it's 15x better, given the price. I'm going to keep looking.

I'm trying to switch from Ole Henriksen to a more MM/drugstore brand. So far I've had luck with Lumene. I tried them in part because the company is fairly ecologically minded/doesn't test on animals (harder to find in drugstore brands), and so far I've really liked the pure radiance toner and moisturizers as well as the SOS cream and the matt touch peat mask. It's not quite as inexpensive as other drugstore brands, but CVS offers promotions for Lumene pretty regularly. I also have combo skin with an oily t-zone.
There are not very good drugstore options for the gel moisturizers. I tried a bunch of drugstore brands and am back to the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel.

I have oily skin that gets a little drier (more like combo skin) in the winter. I've started using Alba aloe and green tea moisturizer. It smells great and moisturizes without making my skin shiny or greasy-feeling. It costs about $15, but a little goes a long way.
I like cerave pm. I have been spending tons of money on different brands at sephora and just decided to try this for a bit, everything breaks me out, but this is working pretty good so far. I want to try the cream but I am nervous.

I will say I use plain Cerave as a night moisturizer, but stick with Clinique for the day. Except that I've been dry lately, so now it's Cerave all the time.
