Maybe Hulu (probably Hulu+ if you want more current episodes) for The Walking Dead. I dont know about ESPN. Maybe it's possible to stream ESPN from their website, but I wouldn't expect to be able to watch games, etc live.
This is a multi-faceted question. If you have an xbox, and depending on your internet provider, you can stream ESPN 360, but it doesn't include all events. Also, if you're not totally averse to doing illegal things and not picky about when you view it, there are torrented versions of almost any media you'd ever want to see online a couple hours after it first airs on TV, but again, this isn't exactly legal and it can be risky virus-wise if you don't know the source. There are also a lot of out-of-country streaming sites like hulu where you can stream just about anything too, but again with the virus sketch factor. There are less sketchy sites too, depending on the channel, the show, etc, but I don't know Walking Dead specifically.
The Walking Dead you can buy per episode on Amazon Prime. I think it's $2/episode. There are 3 or 4 shows we do this way, and it's still a metric fuckton cheaper than having cable.

I watch whatever I want to watch online, for the most part (but I don't watch much). I go to my friend's house to watch the one show I want to watch (Girls). As far as sports, that's the onlllllyyy thing I miss about the TV. I just go to a bar now to watch the games.

You can buy packages for each of the major sports leagues to stream the games, either through your computer or through your tv. It is still cheaper than paying for comcast/verizon every month.

Yes you can watch games if you have an XBox (hockey, basketball, and streaming ESPN). For us, buying an Xbox, an over the air antenna, paying for Internet, and buying shows through Amazon and Hulu was significantly cheaper than the $170 a month we were paying for cable. We also watch The Walking Dead and do it with a season subscription through Amazon. This cost us something like $22.
I use the Roku to get Amazon/Netflix/Hulu, and I think they have channels that allow you to access sports packages too, but I don't have personal experience.

Cjoy is right, I had to fight our cable provider to just give us Internet and not charge us an arm and a leg because we unbundled. Luckily Verizon was running a 29.95 internet promotion at the time I called to cancel everything, and my cable company matched it to keep us as customers.
