I've used it over my whole scalp too. It's thick, but you can mix it with olive oil or peppermint oil (which stimulates blood flow) to help thin it out. I just massage it around my scalp using my fingertips for a couple minutes. Then I leave it in for a while and wash out. It takes a bit to get it out, but it's doable and it's worth it, imo. Google some castor oil hair growth results.
My hairline grew in a whole inch by doing this. Maybe there's a different reason that we had this similar problem, but I don't see any harm in giving it a try for yourself
eta- I'm also a huge supporter of cowashing, which is basically the same idea as Wen.
I assume part of the blood work is to check your thyroid levels? If these come back 'normal' don't be afraid to push harder for treatment--sometimes the 'normal' level isn't normal for you as an individual.

I have the same issue. My dermatologist put me on spironalactone (sp?). It's actually a blood pressure pill, but for some reason it can stop hair loss and clear up acne a bit. I'm not on it anymore, but I do use Nioxin. I don't recommend Rogaine. Once you stop using it, all the hair that grew in will fall out, and often even more.
Yes, my hair had been thinning for 5+ years. During that time I used Rogaine and had good luck with it. (I would note Rogaine isn't for everyone, massive shedding at the beginning and itchy flaky scalp were two of the side effects I experienced). However, when I went off BC and was off for a solid year I found that my hair stopped thinning and actually started becoming thicker. (I was on yaz- which isn't suppose to have any hair loss side effects) So BC is something else to consider.

I'm on a low dose for acne. My Dr. doesn't prescribe a high doses (300 mg) which I read is best for hair loss.
I'm taking 100 mg now and she may increase it depending on my bloodwork. What dose are you on?
How long did it take for your hair to grow after using Rogaine?
I didn't even take Rogaine. My dermatologist told me about it and the side effects. He said he didn't think it would be worth it taking it, but if all else failed and it was getting worse then to consider it.

I have used every shampoo and vitamin there is and saw a few different doctors. I've been tol it's just a genetic thing on my Mom's side of the family. My sister and I are planning to go wig shopping together this year. It makes me cry.
