Would you have a double mastectomy

There are some cases where you carry the specific gene for certain forms of breast cancer which elevates your odds, I believe. If that were the case, I would seriously consider it.

BUT - I say that with not having a history of breast cancer in my family. Had I watched my mom and grandmother pass away from it, I might be a bit more jumpy.

I will be doing the test for the genes since there are 5 people on my mothers side that have had breast or ovary cancer. If positive I will consider a double mastectomy and hysterectomy.

With that history and a positive genetic result - yes. My sister's godmother waited until it showed up. Still had to go through surgery, followed by chemo. She now has to worry about the long term chemo side effects.

We have a friend that this happened to. She ended up carrying the gene and had a double mastectomy at 30.

One of my dearest friends had a preventative double mastectomy and a hysterectomy. She said the peace of mind was worth it, and she went out and got some rockin' implants. I'd absolutely handle it the same way.

If I had the gene, yes I would. (This is assuming that this actually works. I don't really know.)

Yes.

Before I knew I had fibrocystic breasts, I was always getting freaked out by lumps and getting mammograms and ultrasounds. I looked into having the girls removed and reconstructed at one point. I don't even have a family history of breast cancer, either. Fake boobs sounds better than dying a slow and painful death.

If I tested positive for the gene, I absolutely would.
My mom and my step-mom both had double mastectomies after they were diagnosed and neither of them had reconstruction of any kind, so I have two incredible examples of how boobs are just boobs, and that they don't define who you are as a person or as a woman.

Yup. There's a huge history of breast cancer on my mom's side. I have a 33 year old cousin w/ stage 4 breast cancer. I would absolutely do it if I carried the gene.

I absolutely would do this. I have a history of ovarian cancer and was screened for the BRCA gene (neg, thankfully). My mom and g-grandma both passed away from that type of cancer. If it was positive, I would have had a preventative hysterectomy after children. I realize breasts are different and probably tougher, since there is a physical/appearance/sexual aspect, but after going through the thought process I would do it for sure. Totally rock some implants like GOZF's friend. That's awesome, I hope she is doing well.

I really don't know. I think it's one of those things I'd have to decide in the moment. Probably yes, if I could swing reconstruction.

I don't consider it mocking the women. I consider it pointing out a discrepancy regarding preemptive surgery and how it is portrayed in the media.

If I had the gene, yes. I watched my mom die of breast cancer and would absolutely have a double mastectomy to avoid even the smallest bit of what she went through.

My understanding had been that that particular form of breast cancer is especially aggressive, so waiting until it is detectable can be a big risk.
