There are a few standalone DVR systems. I was searching for one for my grandparents for Christmas and none if them had very good Amazon reviews unfortunately.

ETA: I was looking for something subscription free. TiVo is an option if you are open to a subscription

Tivo. It's more expensive, but I think it's worth every penny because I can't stand cable DVRs
