If you are at someone's house and they have lotion on the bathroom counter, do you feel it's all right to take a squirt of it?
Does it make a difference if the lotion is nicely displayed next to the soap on an otherwise clean counter versus a counter that is covered with hairspray and makeup products, etc?

I think presentation matters. One bottle next to soap, good to go, one bottle amidst other personal care items, no go.
ITA w/ housegeek. I would assume that it's for guest use if it's displayed that way. One squirt shouldn't make a difference anyway for someone who is a friend. However, my super power is that I never need lotion, so this is a non-issue for me.
If I needed lotion and it was out, I'd use it. I don't usually go to strangers homes and use the bathroom, so chances are it's a good friend of mine and they wouldn't think anything of it.
I guess I only tend to visit people I know well and we're all pretty open about that stuff, so I'd help myself. If I was in a stranger's house I wouldn't. I would also hope that if someone was visiting my house and needed something, they'd by all means use it/find it/ask for it at least. I'd be sad if someone wasn't comfortable enough my house that they had to stand there analyzing whether or not it was okay to use the lotion.

If it's displayed as explained (clean, clutter free counter with the soap) then I have no problem with it assuming I need lotion. I don't usually b/c I carry a small tube of it with me (diaper bag catchall).

I'm like Dairy. Most of the people that I visit, I am pretty close with. Plus, I would not mind if someone came to my house and used lotion on my counter so I tend to think most people would feel that way.
This reminds me of a story my aunt told once. My little cousin (who is 21) still lives at home. One weekend, my aunt and uncle went out of town (I think it was Cinco de Mayo weekend or something) and knew that my cousin was going to have a party. My aunt is super hospitable so she set out fancy soaps and lotion for my cousin's guests. When she came home at the end of the weekend, the lotion was gone. Apparently, someone thought it was a party favor just for them.

I would use lotion left in a bathroom if I needed it.
If it were in a pretty bottle next to the soap pump, I would probably take at least one squirt by accident, thinking its soap. I do this a LOT in fancy restaurant bathrooms. Sigh.

If I need lotion and it's out for display, then yes, I use it. Or if it's a fun scent that I like, but don't own, I'll use it and mention that I like it to my friend.
