I have never really used a decent base coat on my nails, and of course they chip like crazy as a result. What base coat do you recommend for keeping polish from chipping or peeling?
Honesty sounds like you need a top coat not a base coat. Base coats help separate the polish from your nails, keeping your nails less stained and healthier in my experience, but don't significant effect chipping-that's the roll of a top coat I recommend seche vite

Boo, I already use Seche Vite and it doesn't do much for me. I've been reading online that a base coat can help bind the color more to your nails and prevent chipping. Thank you, though, I LOVE Seche Vite but not for preventing chips!
It is entirely possible I am just too hard on my nails and no polish, base, or topcoat can solve that.

I think base coat definitely makes a difference in wear. I use Essie Grow Stronger because I have the worst nails ever. I also buff out any surface irregularities first - in my case usually peeling toward the tips.
Non-base coat solutions are gloves for doing dishes and trying to adhere to "nails are jewels, not tools".
I ended up buying Essie First Base last night--they had it at Target and the Amazon reviews were decent. My nails look great today. I will let you know how long my current polish lasts without chipping. Usually my nails chip within 24-36 hours without a base coat or with the Sally Hansen crap base I had--so, so far so good.
I've always used OPI, and had decent results. I'm lazy, though, and usually use neither top nor base coat. By the time my color chips, I'm ready to go bare or do a new color anyway.

LOL. I think I need another line of work if I'm going to grow good nails.
I use Orly Bonder, but I can't keep polish on my fingernails for more than two days.
I am with you there. Or I just need full-time childcare. My nails are sadly more tools than jewels these days.. maybe one day when I have older kids.
My polish started to chip today, so the base gave me 4 good days which is 2-4x longer than I normally get. I am calling that a win. I will definitely give the Zoya a shot in the future, GoDawgs. (PS. I am a Bulldog too :Y:)
