We took our 9 y.o. beagle mix, Skylar, for his annual shots today. During the exam, the vet detected a heart murmur. She said it did not sound significant, but we will be testing him further mid-June.
Background on Skylar is he has never had health issues. He is energetic, playful, drinks and eats fine. He does not cough (aside from doing the beagle reverse cough thing from time to time which he has done for as long as I can remember). He doesn't pant a lot unless he's been outside rough-housing with our other dog and stops panting relatively quickly once he's inside and calmed down.
The vet said it could be easily treatable or he could die but they wouldn't know anything until we run the tests.
Right now, I am online researching and have seen that it would be a good idea to switch him to a low sodium food which I am trying to figure out the best brand and will begin to transition him to it tomorrow.
Does anyone have any advice to offer? He is outside right now playing with our other dog, and it's making me a nervous wreck that he shouldn't be super active.
Oh, also, he was at the vet five months ago for a paw injury, and the vet did not mention a murmur at that time when he listened to his heart. Not sure if that's relevant but I thought I'd add that in.
